Far fighter escort. The project. Dry. USSR. 1948

Long-range escort fighter. The project. Dry. USSR. 1948

At the end of 1948, the Sukhoi Design Bureau had completed a preliminary conceptual design two-seater fighter escort for turboprop slider VC-2.

In the explanatory memorandum to the draft stated that: "The question of the creation of the fighter escort for far bombers Tu-4 to this day could not be resolved due to the lack of a suitable engine. In connection with the planned release in 1949, the theater VC-2, there is a technological opportunity for building such a fighter with a range of 5,000 km and a maximum speed of 800 km / h This rate, though inferior to the speed of modern jet fighter, but will be sufficient for the fighter escort, as the latter shall fight in the main to maneuver, not looking too far away from the escort team. Maneuverability fighter escort with the engine VK-2, despite the comparable heavy (8 tons of goals), will not yield to the maneuverability of a conventional fighter jet engine. This is explained by the fact that at tremendous speeds maneuverability will be determined in the main unit load on the wing and motor power.
In the proposed project are two escort fighter pilot. This enables the pilot to come to the main target with a fresh market forces, and in addition, the second pilot can provide substantial assistance in a combat situation … ".

When the combat use fighter escort it was assumed that a large part of the route is at an altitude of 12,000 meters followed by meeting with the bombers planned for 300-500 km distance from the target at an altitude of 10,000 m in this case techno range reached 5,000 km. If you are following in the entire route at an altitude of 10,000 m, range was reduced to 4,500 km.
According to the preliminary design, plane an all-metal low-wing monoplane.
The fuselage of circular cross-section, in front of which was placed a turboprop slider. Front and rear of the cockpit fuel tanks were located. In the center section, under the floor of the cockpit was the main landing gear compartment, and the third fuel tank.

In the rear part of the fuselage kit was located. Hermetic cockpit was equipped with an ejection seat. Control of the aircraft — redundant.
Wing cantilever trapezoidal shape in plan with an elongation of 7.5. Under the wing tips were attached additional fuel tanks.
Plumage, which includes a stabilizer with elevators and rudder keel, fastened in the rear fuselage.
The power plant consisted of theater VC-2 with a capacity of 4200 hp, with a specific fuel consumption of 0.135 kg / hp-hr. The gases was carried out through two jet nozzles arranged along the sides of the fuselage behind the wing.
Armament consisted of a 2-motionless guns, HP-23, installed in the wing, with a total 400 rounds ammunition.
Chassis — tricycle with a tail wheel. Wheels main supports were removed along the span in the center-toe and tail wheel — in the rear fuselage.
The cockpit was equipped with a standard set of flight control and navigation devices (duplicate). Aerial navigation was carried out with the help of the ARC-5 and avtoshturmana. To facilitate long piloting installed autopilot. Relationship with the land provided the two radio stations: VHF — "Maple", KV — RSB-5.

The main computational properties of the fighter escort:
Length, mm — 13 350
wing span, mm — 16 200
Wing area, m2 — 35
aircraft weight, kg empty — 5770, maks.vzletnaya — 10000
maximum speed of the aircraft, km / h at sea level — 715, at H = 10 000 m — 800
bend time, with at H = 1000 m — 18 for H = 5000 m — 26
Service ceiling, m -14,000
time set N = 10 000 m, min. — 9
range, km to the N = 12 000m, Vcr. = 550 km / h — 5000
on H = 10 000 m, Vcr. = 480 km / h — 4500
length of the runway, m (without the speed.) — 650

Project was referred to the Air Force in November 1948 Deputy. Chairman of the Supreme Soviet Air Force ATK Major General N.A.Zhemchuzhin IAS reporting to the Air Force Commander their opinions on the proposal Sukhoi, said: "… According to the project that Sukhoi fighter escorts his proposed has no advantage over the machine Pashinina with AL-73TK and RD-45 turbojet, which was based on a plan 1947-48. and the decision of the Council of Ministers of the construction was stopped.
Create a fighter escort with this data is unlikely to purposefully, albeit with a different motor group … ".

Fighter Flank in the series did not go, and data not. A Sukhoi fighter remained in the outline. Although the car looked very promising for the Soviet air force, not only as far fighter support, and as far as scout (range 5,000 km), and especially as loitering altitude air defense interceptor (practical height 14,000 m (!)).
Apparently, this was the last project helical single-engine fighter Russian Air Force.
November 27, 1949 decision of the IAP Soviet Sukhoi Design Bureau in the factory 134 was disbanded.
