In 2012, more than 20 ships of the Northern Fleet (NF) participated in long-distance hikes, leaving the stern of more than 200 thousand nautical miles. For the first time this year, the ship's group of the Northern Fleet operated in the northern latitudes of the Arctic Ocean for the first time in the history of the Russian Navy was conducted amphibious landing on unequipped coast islands of the archipelago of the Novosibirsk.

As stressed by the commander of the Northern Fleet, Vice Admiral Vladimir Korolev, "in Arctic seamen decided not only military but also civilian tasks — is training to assist vessels in distress, safety of navigation of civil, survey neglected areas of navigation."

The crews of the ships of the Northern Fleet successfully completed the task of providing security for civilian shipping in the Gulf of Aden.

His crew spent 159 days at sea, leaving behind the stern of more than 29 thousand miles, custody dozens of civil courts of foreign states to avoid a meeting with the pirates and successfully delivered hundreds of thousands of tons of cargo to destinations.

In 2012, the Northern Fleet has been actively developing cooperation with the navies of other countries. An agreement was reached to conduct an annual international naval exercise "Pomorie" and "Northern Eagle", the main aim of which is to develop joint anti-terrorism elements, providing security for civilian navigation, assistance at sea.

Northern Fleet ships perform a routine visit to the ports of Norway, the UK, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Malta, the United States, Cuba, Syria, and Saudi Arabia.
