The ozone layer protects the Earth from ultraviolet radiation from the sun, began this spring over the Arctic unprecedented thin. This was said in a statement issued on Tuesday by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
According to the United Nations specialized agency in the field of meteorology, the ozone layer over the Arctic region lost 40% of its thickness, with the onset of winter to early March. The highest level of thinning of the ozone layer in the winter, recorded earlier, was 30%.
WMO calls causes such developments the use of chemicals that are harmful to the ozone layer, as well as the harsh winter, which has become much colder than usual, according to ITAR-TASS.
