Authorities imposed a state of emergency in Sholokhov district of Rostov region, where the drought has killed more than three thousand acres of crops, told RIA Novosti on Saturday GUMCHS representative of Russia in the field of Marina Chernyavskaya.
Since late May, emergency mode due to soil and atmospheric drought was introduced in the Upper Don Zavetinskom and districts of the region, killing crops in the area of 27.5 thousand and 8.9 thousand hectares, respectively.
"From April 10 to present Sholokhov district died 3.094 thousand hectares of crops. Decision of the district head a regime of emergency" — representative said. She added that due to rising temperatures and lack of precipitation experts predict a shortage of crops.
Abnormal drought observed in Russia in 2010 — then the heat lost about 20% of all cultivated land, or 30% of grain crops, and the harvest has fallen by more than 30%, to 61 million tonnes. The grain harvest in 2011 totaled 93.9 million tons in net weight. Experts of the Russian Grain Union, expressed concern about the new drought this year due to record-high air pressure in the European part of Russia.
