British Foreign Secretary William Hague condemned the sentences of former presidential candidate in Belarus and urged the Belarusian authorities to release them.
"I strongly condemn the sentences of ex-Presidential Candidates, Nikolai Statkevich and Dmitri Usu made by May 26. Whatever the official reasons for their conviction, it is clear that in reality their "crime" is an attempt to exercise their right to protest against election fraud on December 19, "- said Haig in a statement released by the British Embassy in Minsk.
"The Belarusian authorities must understand that there can be a normalization of relations with the international community is not without honor the most basic Human Rights and freedom, "- added the British minister.
Haig urged Minsk to release all political prisoners and remove their criminal record, to stop the persecution of political opponents, to conduct an objective investigation into allegations of incidents of torture detainees and reverse the decision to terminate the activities of the OSCE mission in Minsk.
