Damage caused by forest fires in 2012 in the Transbaikal increased by 35%

Preliminary damage caused by forest fires in the Trans-Baikal region in 2012 amounted to 440 million rubles, which is 35% higher than in 2011, the number of fires in forests decreased by two times, but passed the fire area nearly doubled, told RIA Novosti on Wednesday, a representative of the State Forest Service region.

"This year, the province recorded 819 forest fires against 1.6 thousand last year. But the area of fires has increased from 251 thousand hectares to 486 000, which is almost two times. Passing on the fire season this year, especially in spring strongly influenced by adverse weather conditions — high temperatures, dry and windy weather, "- said the source.

According to him, out of 819 fires about 52% of the fires were eliminated in the first day, the second day — 23.2%. Much of the area traversed by fire — 433 000 hectares or 89% of the total — occurred in large fires.

"The cost of suppression was about 98 million rubles, but the amount will be adjusted. Final expenditures for fire fighting in 2011, for example, amounted to 162 million rubles," — said the representative office.
