The company for the first time after tierce accident at the plant "Fukushima-1" had a test removal of rods of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from the fourth power unit, reported agentstvoKiodo.
Removing the spent fuel rods — a key step towards the complete dismantling of the reactor. After the accident at the plant the company monitors the state of spent fuel rods with remote-controlled cameras.
At unit stores stations fifteen hundred rods of spent nuclear fuel, including 1,331 spent fuel rod. Petersen plans to assess their condition checked out the bars, the extent of damage in the explosion, as well as the level of corrosion after a pool where spent fuel rods are cooled down, the experts during an emergency poured sea water.
The second sample extract cores scheduled for Thursday.
In March of last year because of the tsunami, the height of which was three times higher than expected, down came the cooling system at the plant "Fukushima-1". The accident was the largest in 25 years after the Chernobyl accident. There have been numerous leaks of radiation into the atmosphere and sea water. From the area within 20 kilometers of the plant were evacuated 140,000 people. Most of them are still living in temporary housing. A number of areas of high levels of contamination is expected to be declared uninhabitable. Complete elimination of the accident, including the dismantling of the reactors, will take about 40 years.
