Number of forest fires in Karelia in 2011 has doubled

Number of forest fires in Karelia from the end of April, when it started fire season has increased by more than double compared to the same period last year, fires reported at 180 sites, this contributes to dry, windy weather, said on Wednesday the press service of the Ministry of Environment and ecology of the region.

"Since the beginning of the fire season in the forests of Karelia recorded 180 fires in the area of about 750 hectares. Last year at this date there were 56 fires in the area of 185 hectares," — said in a statement.

According to the ministry, fire, promote dry sunny weather and strong winds.

"An important indicator is not the number of fires, and the average of the square. Karelia in the average area of the fire (4.2 hectares), slightly below the average for the district fire area — 4.4 hectares. At the same time, in the Arkhangelsk region on June 17, there were 92 forest fire with an average area 7.1 hectares in the Komi Republic — 87 fires with an average area of 5.3 hectares, "- the ministry noted.
