Finds from Volin

Excavations in the Pomeranian town of Wolin found that quite irrespective of whether he is a legendary Vineta or not, quite clearly, that it was one of the main shopping items of the Baltic Sea. Archaeological material found here many times greater than the findings of the other cities of the Baltic Slavs. The city was not only trade, but also craft. Does it produce a majority of the most popular products of the time, from ceramics to jewelry.

One of the most well-represented in the crafts Wolin was carved bone. A bit of dry statistics. Of all found in Pomerania 62,000 of bone 58,000 accounts for Wolin. Moreover, 39 800 of the 52 000 found in Wolin of bone were made in the same workshop.

Manufacturing ridges of bone was at a very high level. Archaeologists have estimated that in the 9th century in Wolin produced at least 13 different types of combs. Since the early 10th century. to mid-11th century. it added another 19 new species. After this, the decline in production in the second half of the 11th century Wolin delivered to the market at least 20 types of combs. Even after a hundred years of decline to Number 9. But vseravno scale is impressive — in good times, merchants can choose from more than 30 species of only ridges!

The fact that it is made from the fruits and seeds of tropical plant Mucuna adans. The plant is so unknown and rare in Europe that still do not have neither Russian nor German names. This is the only discovery of this kind in the Baltic. In addition to a necklace was found and a separate bead of this tropical plant.

In the center of Volin, at the highest point of the city, was rasskopan pagan temple, there are 2 phases of existence. The first temple dates from the second half of the 9th century. Dimensions — 4 × 5 m inside the building was a partition, delivshaya room into 2 rooms. Presumably, in a large room to the meeting place. In the center was a small room in the identified masonry foundation on which most likely was an idol. In the corner of the room was found "fire position." It seems that around the idol priests kept the sacred fire.

In the same small room were found fragments of silk fabric. I wonder whether these tissue decorations of the temple, the sacred banner, or just precious booty from a military campaign.

Also in the first temple was found a small wooden phallus.

In the neighboring house to the church was found the famous "pocket" Idol Svantevit.

And lastly — the most interesting!

Though the population of Volin and was multinational, two of its inhabitants even so different in their appearance. Male and female skulls Dinaric type talk about the Mediterranean origin of these people. Female age 20-25, men — 25-30. Perhaps the husband and wife. Especially interesting is artificially deformed female skull Toulouse type.

Why is this done? To mind immediately come common at this time in the Baltic Slavs craniotomy. Another type of "mystical" operations? What were these strange visitors and what they did in the Slavic lands? What a pity that the answers to these questions can not be found.

Just within the church (if I understood correctly) was found and a wooden amulet depicting very familiar. Someone surprised emblem Rurik in Wolin? -I do not :)))
