Divine rally in Tibet

Even if Jesus Christ was in India, its religion obviously remained foreign to him

Nicholas Roerich. "Crossroads of Christ and Buddha" (1925). "On the manuscripts about Issa — the artist wrote in his diary — first the most complete negation of […] Then slowly crawl timid fragmentary information […] Finally, it appears that about the manuscripts heard and knew the old people in Ladakh"

Gospel of Tibet

A little more than ten years ago, the last day of May 1999, in the magazine "Ogonek" published an unusual letter to Pope John Paul II (Ioannes Paulus II, 1920-2005): «Your Holiness, — it said. — Write your ordinary Christian with a single purpose: to correct with your help monstrous misunderstanding in which a completely incomprehensible reasons for nearly two millennia, remains the Christian world, and not to let the mistake soon migrated to a new, twenty-first century, enlightened. " Next, the letter-writer — journalist Sergey Alekseev — asked the Pope to open people's truth to admit that for sixteen years Jesus traveled to India, where learned the wisdom of Hinduism and Buddhism. Only then went to preach in Palestine. Alekseev was confident that the Vatican archives must exist documents proving him right.

It really is a question of one of the mysteries of the Holy Scripture in any of the canonical Gospels there is no information about where he lived and what he did Jesus at the age of 13 to 29 years. Alexeev was not the first: this dumbness Evangelicals have always given space for a variety of versions, but generally assumed that Christ spent those years in Egypt.

Whence Alexeyev received such important information, which is quite capable to produce the most radical change in the Christian view of the world? A journalist referred to the book "The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ", published by the Russian journalist Nikolai Notovich (1858-after 1916) in 1894 in Paris. It Notovich told how, during his tour of small Tibet (Ladakh), he found in a Buddhist monastery Hemis document testifying to Christ's visit to India — the so-called "Tibetan Gospel," published by him under nazvniem "Life of Saint Issa".

A little later in the book Notovitch Alexeev made a documentary — "Secret Years of Jesus" (2003), aiming to prove the authenticity of the "Tibetan Gospel." Argument is that Christ was in India, because I could not be there — this is indicated by the similarity of Christian and Buddhist ethics, witnesses who also saw Hemis amazing document, and the spirit of the text — "authenticity Eastern Book" .

Those who doubted the authenticity of "Tibet gospel", according to Internet audience was little. But the issue has gained in popularity, and in time came several translated works by authors who have expressed full confidence in finding Notovitch. This article in the year of the decade for the treatment of Sergei Alexeyev Roman pervosvyascheniku we would like to remind you that there is an opposite point of view, but at the same time to weigh the arguments used by its supporters. Many, unfortunately, remain outside the text, but more information can be found in articles by Boris Falicov and Vitaly Pitanova.

Jolly Lama

If you believe the story Notovitch story began October 14, 1887, when he was in St. Petersburg correspondent of the newspaper "New Time", took the train from Lahore, capital of Punjab, to Rawalpindi. The ultimate goal was traveling Ladakh — high desert region of the Indus valley, sandwiched between the Kunlun mountain ranges and the Himalayas. Its boundaries — Mulbek village — he reached in fifteen days' journey. Foreign critics of the XIX century, and there were a lot of time (recall that the book Notovitch published in 1894), has repeatedly argued that the very fact Notovitch trip to Ladakh — falsification. But Leonid Mitrokhin in his small, but very thoughtful book "Kashmiri legends about Jesus Christ" (1990), involving parallel sources, showed that information Notovitch authentic, historical and fundamental inconsistencies in the plot of the story is not a journalist.

Nicholas Notovich was not only a journalist, but Russian spy in the East. But was his interest in Ladakh stimulated the War Department — is not known. Reproduction of site Universal Fellowship of Light

In Mulbeke Notovich went to the monastery (gompa) and was accepted by local lama. Brought Tibetan beer — chang. Struck up a conversation. We are talking about the occurrence of Islam in traditionally Buddhist areas of influence. "With the Europeans much easier — said Lama — they worship the Buddha is often better than some Tibetan lamas." Notovich looked surprised.

"We are also honored that — continued Lama — What are the Son of the One God, and see in it not only some of the Son, but the perfect being favorites of all. In fact, the spirit of the Buddha was enshrined in the sacred person of Issa (Jesus so called in the East), which is without the help of fire and sword to spread the teachings of our great and true religion throughout the world. "

According to Lama, there are scriptures that prove his words. They were written in India and Nepal in the Pali language in the I century and later translated into Tibetan. Translations are stored in the residence of the Dalai Lama in Lhasa, and the copy — in several major Tibetan monasteries. But all of this is kept in strict confidence, and to the uninitiated they hardly show. Notovich was shocked. Now, he says, he had one goal — to Hemis monastery, located near the capital of Ladakh — Leh town. There, according to Lama, keep copies of precious manuscripts.

The whole episode raises many questions. Why should Lama would tell the first comer of such secret documents? None of the European travelers never even heard of. Thus it is necessary to know the Tibetan monks — the best in the world of cunning. Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947) testifies:

Every educated Gelong (monk) knows a lot. [But] even in the eyes not guess, when he agrees with you or inwardly laughing at you, knowing more than you do. How many of these stories have molchalnikov on roadways "scientists" who have fallen in the most ridiculous situation.

But we have to admit that if this conversation was actually Notovich masterfully used the idea of a joker monk.

Hemis mystery

Until Lech Notovich reached November 1, and the gate Hemis came two days later. Whether he was actually there? Mitrokhin denies. The fact that Notovich says about a certain religious holiday, which he found outside the gompa. The holiday was not easy, because accompanied by a large costume show — tsamom. Mitrokhin identifies it with a holiday Seth dedicated Padmasambhava (Radmasa? Bhava, VIII century) — Patriarch of Tibetan Buddhism. However, it is celebrated in the summer. Consequently, Notovich dreams. But the journalist could easily get on the other, no less spectacular holiday lights in honor of the Buddha's descent from heaven Tushita for the latest incarnation of the people in the form of Siddhartha Gautama (Siddhartha Gautama, 563-483 BC). It just occurs at the beginning of November. Evident and detail, which described the mystical act. In our view, this is an argument in favor of visiting Notovich Hemis. However, there is another important fact to which attention Mitrokhin. But until we return to the story Notovitch.

After completion of the presentation he had to talk to the abbot, and during the conversation he allegedly asked for books on Issa. Lama replied evasively, saying that they are, but where — he now remembers. The next time he shows them necessarily. Our hero is a man tempted to pretend that his theme is not so, and changed the subject. He himself decided to go to Kashmir for a while and wait for some excuse to visit again, Hemis. But fate had its calculation: after leaving Leh Notovich fell from his horse and broke his right leg. According to him, it was a good excuse to go back to the monastery, to which was half way. While on treatment, the journalist allegedly frequent contact with the abbot, repeatedly setting the stage for a conversation about the mysterious books, and whenever Lama left from a direct answer. But one day he showed up with two huge yellowed tomes in hand. In them was the same Tibetan biography of Jesus. Its volume was small — 244 verses that do not have names and are scattered randomly across the two works. Lama through an interpreter read them for recording Notovich. Later, before the publication of the traveler systematized all the pieces and brought them into a coherent narrative.

In this part of the story Notovitch also have inconsistencies. To home are Mitrokhin and pay attention. The fact is that in a conversation with a Russian journalist Lama considered himself a school zheltoshapochnyh monks (Gelug). However Hemis — krasnoshapochny Monastery (Nyingma). It is the same as if the priest of the ROC in conversation with a foreigner called himself examined. Probably to no abbot at that time Notovich not talk, and if they talk, it is not about is writing about. However, this does not mean that all the adventure with a broken leg — pure fiction, according to most critics Notovitch. Scrupulous Mitrokhin found a witness, confirmed the receipt of Russian journalist injured. They had a French engineer Alexander Favre from Srinagar, who had no motive to distort the facts. But returned it after injury Notovich in Hemis? In our view, it is quite possible he broke his leg near Leh, but has not sought the assistance of the garrison doctor Karl Marx, who a week ago had treated tooth. Accordingly, nowhere else except in Hemis, to help him could not.

Buddhist lamas. From the records of Roerich, "Llamas know the meaning of [" Tibet gospel. "] But why missionaries so violently rebelled and discredit the manuscript? Defame "Apocrypha" just can […] But who does not recognize that many of the "Apocrypha" is much more thorough than many official documents. " Photo (Creative Commons license): wildxplorer

Above, we would like to give the reader to understand that Notovich Munchausen was not easy, as he is sometimes presented. And given it is with great caution in the story of another character of the story — Professor Agrskogo Government College in India by John Douglas. In 1895 he went to Hemis to verify the reality of history Notovitch. According to him, the abbot assured that his lifetime no European with a broken leg is not turned to him for help. Moreover, he does not know any word about Issa, never heard about them and no they did not read.

But since everything in this story is subject to doubt, you can not believe and to Douglas. About his time in Hemis known only from his report, published in the British journal "Nineteenth Century» («Nineteenth century»). More on Professor, we do not know anything, and he could prove himself hoaxer. At least, in his article, there is also the obvious "punctures". So, he says to certify the prior Hemis: "Buddhists do not even know about it (Issa) the name, none of the lamas had never heard of him, except that of the missionaries." In the other passage is directly opposite statement Lama: "I [have] made inquiries, but the abbots of other monasteries in Tibet are not familiar with the book or manuscript, which refers to Issa." Finally, the lama could mislead the persistent European security reasons monastery library — many travelers who visited Tibet reported that the fears are not groundless monks, the Europeans really tried to supplement their collection of Oriental curiosities, stooping to theft.

From all this, in our view, we can conclude: Nicholas Notovich went to Ladakh, Hemis was on the way back and broke his leg, he returned to the monastery. It is hard to imagine that a stay in the monastery Notovich not talked to his superior. But we assume that these conversations were far from those mentioned by Notovich. Accordingly, any documents related to Issa, Notovich not bring. And even if it brings something that might have been instruments of Christ, the Russian explorer was not able to translate it in such a short time, it is hard to imagine how his interpreter-Tibetan mediocre speaking English, could translate by ear difficult theological text. But even if we accept the authenticity of the manuscript Notovitch analysis of its content proves proputeshestvovav the East, Christ did not accept his ideas. In our view, this is an argument against the "Tibetan Gospel." Or we must admit that the 16 years of his life, Jesus spent in vain. Somehow this argument in the debate round.

East trail of Christ

According to the "Tibetan Gospel," Jesus was a bodhisattva — a Buddhist saint, the first after the Buddha in the rank of sacred beings. At age 13, he allegedly secret from parents left the caravan trade to India. The first 6 years he spent among the Hindus, who

taught him to read and understand the Vedas, to heal through prayer, preaching, explaining the scriptures to people and cast out evil spirits from the bodies of men, restoring their sanity.

However, due to the fact that Jesus began to preach among the lower castes, the Brahmins organized a conspiracy against him, and he was forced to flee. The next 6 years Jesus spent among the Buddhists, learning the secrets of their doctrine. When he was 29, he went to preach in their homeland.

There he urged Jews to honor the one God, to see all his will to keep his commandments, and be patient with the Roman authorities, enslaved Judah, because the hour when legions of the empire will leave this land is near. He was honored and the people, and the Pharisees, which we used to see the enemies of Christ. But Pontius Pilate (Pontius Pilatus) was burning hatred for him, fearing for his power. In the end, he conspired against Jesus. Prophet was captured and, despite all entreaties priests, crucified. Ends with "Tibetan gospel" is not the resurrection of Jesus in the flesh, and his care in an intangible world of light. The whole story was supposedly written several years after the events described by the words of Palestinian merchants in India who met people who knew Issa as a young student.

"Tibetan Gospel" always touted by his supporters as proof of the Buddhist roots of Christianity. But oddly enough, the text published Notovitch of Jesus's stay among the Buddhists say exactly two lines, and in his speech, we find no ideas and images specific to Buddhism. Where there took so beloved esoteric "Eastern Spirit"? We are not talking about no nirvana, no reincarnation of souls. Instead, the common idea of the one God who created the world, it is not the present followers of the Buddha. If the gospel Notovitch replace the name "Christ" to "Leo Tolstoy", no one would notice, since the hero's speech from the Tibetan text is from the standby set of humanistic values, by which signs up most religions.

Much more text Notovitch tells of Christ's Hindu, although the story line is much less interest from fans Notovitch. However, here a similar pattern: no no question of karma, or of samsara, or the yoga. In Notovitch says that Jesus studied the Vedas, but denied their divine origin. But to study the Vedas, not recognizing their divinity, meaningless: it is a collection of mantras that are said at the time the various religious rituals. However, there is no sense in that, having studied the Vedas, go to Buddhists, because they are clearly rejected.

"Enemy" Buddhism

However, our attention was drawn to another, perhaps even more interesting fact. It is clear that in the teachings of Christ, as set out in the canonical Gospels, and in the "Tibetan Gospel," no Buddhist ideas do not. But we find them in the main opponents of the Christians — the Gnostics, who came out of the circle, in particular, the Gospel of Judas. Gnostics very peculiar misinterpret Scripture, arguing that those who in the Old Testament calls itself the "Creator" — is actually the Devil, from whose hands by chance came so ugly world — a world of suffering and sorrow. The true God is very far from us, most likely he does not even have an image, as an abstract entity, as agreed by all Buddhist, for that matter, and so, if we dig deeper, that life on earth originated in error imperfect beings.

And in Christ, according to the Gnostics, was not there anything human — only eternal light, impervious to any suffering. His suffering and death on the cross the imaginary — no more than a mockery of the master of this world, foolishly confident in his omnipotence and impotence disgraced end on the essence of Jesus. For Christ was in this world, to indicate futility of worship to the one who calls himself the hosts, and direct your heart to the light of truth. Just so people will be able to overcome … (attention) chain of rebirths. The very first of the Gnostics and the "father of all heresies" Simon Magus (????), A contemporary of the apostles, carrying everywhere for a certain Helen — the prostitute from Tyre, declaring it to be the reincarnation of Queen Helena — culprits Trojan War.

Those who can get out of the karmic corridor, according to the Gnostics, the wait will not paradise, as are Christians, and dissolved into oblivion, devoid of pain — Gnostic nirvana. So at least it taught Basilides (???????????, II century) from Alexandria, and his followers.

Communication Gnostic theories of Buddhism is understandable: Asia led a fairly active trade with India, and, of course, was the migration of ideas. So it is likely that Jesus was aware of them. In that case, his detachment from Buddhism was quite conscious.

From the above, we believe that the "story of Issa" — it is a fake, made Notovich. But it is an interesting and witty fake, which drags, awakens a desire to think, to seek the truth and reflect on the eternal questions.

Tibetan mirages

Throughout the twentieth century the "script", "Tibetan gospel" have seen a few people, it is worthy of our trust. The first of these was Swami Abhedananda (Swami Abhedananda, 1866-1939) — Indian scientist, Vedanta and Sanskrit. In 1922, he went his way to Hemis. Most interesting is that Abhedananda had not believed a word of the book Notovitch. For the sake of curiosity, he asked the lamas, what they think about this story. How right he was surprised when he brought the books with which "worked" Notovich. The scientist could not even find pieces that Russian journalist missed. He published them in his book "In Kashmir and Tibet."

Hemis. Seth holiday. Favorite places of meditation Padmasambhava were cemeteries and other places inhabited by evil spirits, which he has learned to deal effectively. This skill helped him in Tibet: none of the other Buddhist masters could not resist the demons, which are so numerous in the Himalayas. Fall of 1925 during his famous Central Asian Expedition (1925-1928) visited Hemis Nicholas Roerich. In his diary of September 19 is the record:

We learned about the authenticity of the manuscript about Issa. In Hemi is really old Tibetan translation from the manuscript, written in Pali […] Tales of the forgery of destroyed …

True, six years later, Roerich notice vague: that the rumors that he had found "a manuscript the time of Christ" — "malicious" allegations. And in 1988 his acquaintance with a mysterious manuscript said Lyudmila Shaposhnikova — Director General of the Museum by name of? K. Roerich. According to her, it was in 1979, during a visit of the same Hemis.

All of these stories have in common — when meeting with the "Tibetan gospel" not been a single photo, no copies of the pages of the manuscript. This is very strange. But we do not question the sincerity of these scientists. It is quite possible that the pictures were made by unfortunate circumstances. We ask the question in another way: Abhedananda, Roerich and Shaposhnikov saw something that quite honestly mistaken for "Tibetan gospel." But what were these documents — a topic for another article.
