Experimental Design Bureau named Cradles developed, manufactured and tested a prototype of the resonator pulsed detonation engine with two-stage combustion kerosinovozdushnoy mixture. As theITAR-TASS, average measured engine thrust was about a hundred pounds, and the duration of continuous operation — more than ten minutes. Until the end of this year, OKB intends to manufacture and test a full-size pulsed detonation engine.

According to the chief designer of OKB Cradles Alexander Tarasov, the trials were simulated operating conditions typical of the turbojet and ramjet engines. Measured values of thrust and specific fuel consumption were 30-50 percent better than conventional jet engines. In the experiments carried on and off multiple new engine, as well as traction control.

Based on these studies, the data obtained during the test, as well as circuit-design analysis OKB Cradles intends to propose the development of a family of pulse detonation aircraft engines. In particular, the engines can be created with a short service life for unmanned aircraft and missiles and aircraft engines with cruising supersonic flight.

In the future, based on new technologies can be developed engines for the space-rocket systems and combined propulsion aircraft, able to fly in the atmosphere and beyond.

According to the design office, the new engines will increase the thrust planes in the 1.5-2. In addition, the use of such power plants range or mass air weapons can increase by 30-50 per cent. The share of new engines will be 1.5-2 times less than that of conventional jet propulsion.

The fact that Russia is working to create a pulse detonation enginereportedin March 2011. This was stated then Ilya Fedorov, managing director of research and production association "Saturn", which includes the OKB Cradles. About what exactly the type of detonation engine in question, Fedorov did not elaborate.

At present there are three types of pulsating engines — valve, valveless and detonation. Operation of the power plant is periodically supplied to the combustion fuel and oxidant which ignites the fuel mixture and the outflow of combustion gases from the nozzle to form a jet thrust. Unlike conventional jet engine is detonation combustion of the fuel mixture at which the flame front extends faster than the speed of sound.

Pulsating jet engine was invented in the late XIX century, the Swedish engineer Martin Wiberg. Throbbing engine is simple and cheap to manufacture, but due to the nature of burning fuel — undependable. For the first time a new type of engine has been used commercially in the Second World War, cruise missiles on German V-1. They established the engine Argus As-014 company Argus-Werken.

Currently, several major defense companies in the world are engaged in research in the field of high-performance pulse jet engines. In particular, the work of leading French company SNECMA and U.S. General Electric and Pratt &Whitney. In 2012, the Research Laboratory of the U.S. Navyannouncedthe intention to develop a spin detonation engine, which will be replaced by a conventional gas turbine ship propulsion.

Spin detonation engines differ from pulse that detonation combustion fuel mixture which is continuous — the combustion front moves into the annular combustion chamber in which the fuel mixture is continuously updated.
