At present, the agricultural enterprises of Russia bred 39 breeds of sheep, 14 of them — fine wool. The total number of sheep and goats on January 1, 2013 totaled 23.9 million head, or 104.4% compared to the corresponding period in 2012.
This was announced at the conference "State and prospects of development of sheep farming and the improvement of its legal regulation", the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation.
The conference noted that sheep farming is an integral part of the economy of our country. This meets the needs of livestock sub-sector of the population in the traditional types of raw materials and food needed in the harsh climatic conditions of the individual areas of the country.
In total livestock farms sheep and goats has increased by 124 thousand units, (peasant) farms — to 982 thousand.
