Qatar buys 200 German Leopard

Qatar's Ministry of Defence wants to buy from Germany and 200 main battle tanks Leopard 2, reports Defense News. Amount of a possible transaction valued at two billion euros. Preliminary talks between the representatives of the German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Qatari military department has already taken place. Further details regarding the purchase of tanks while unidentified.

At the current time the Army of Qatar have only 30 main battle tanks AMX-30B2 French production. These machines were delivered to the country in the late 1980s.

Earlier enthusiasm for buying tanks Leopard 2 showed the military department of Saudi Arabia. At first it was about the ability of buying 270 tanks, but in June 2012 it was reported that deal can be expanded up to 600-800 Leopard 2. Extended amount of the transaction is estimated at 10 billion euros. It must be emphasized that many German political parties do not approve sale of tanks in Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, many countries of the Cooperation Council of Arab Gulf countries, which includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, have begun to implement the purchase of new weapons and upgrade existing ones. These applets are implemented in the light of the likely military operation in the West Iran.
