Scientists working on excavations in northern Peru have discovered more than three dozen people sacrificed some 600 years ago, in the days of the Incas.

Around their necks and collarbones some bodies show traces of sharp weapon, but otherwise they are well preserved, — said Carlos Webster, Head of the excavation camp Chotuna-Chornankap.

Sprawling over 95 acres of area of archaeological work is 12 miles from the coastal city of Chiclayo, near which they were one of the most significant finds of the last century — the ancient tomb of Sipan ruler. These people have sacrificed for just a few decades before the Spanish arrived in the territory of modern Peru.

Despite the fact that archaeologists regularly find traces of human sacrifice Inca times, and even older, found the remains of 33 people in one place rarely.

Scientists believe that human sacrifice was commonplace in the culture of the Incas, which reached its peak between the XV and the middle of the XVI century — just before the Spaniards landed in what is now Peru, Chile and Ecuador.

Most of the remains belong to the girls at the age of about 15 years. One of them was even pregnant: her abdomen was discovered collarbone four-month fetus.
