Russia has created a fundamentally new power propulsion system for space missions.
The prototype nuclear power installation megawatt class, designed for interplanetary missions, will appear in Russia in 2017.
Work on the use of nuclear power in space have been developed and actively conducted here and in the U.S. in the 1960s and 70s.
Originally was to create rocket engines, which, instead of the chemical energy of combustion of fuel and oxidizer used to heat hydrogen to a temperature of about 3000 degrees. But it turned out that such a direct way still inefficient. We briefly get more traction, but the spurt, which in the case of abnormal operation of the reactor can be radioactively contaminated.
For these and other reasons, some of us in the U.S. have been terminated or suspended. Was offered a completely different approach. It differs from the old in the same than different from the conventional hybrid car. In a typical car engine spins the wheel, and in hybrid — electric power produced by the engine, and it has electricity turns the wheels. That is, create some intermediate power.
Proposed a scheme in which space does not heat the reactor jet ejected from it, and produces electricity. Hot gas from the reactor spinning turbine, the turbine spinning generator and a compressor that circulates the working fluid in a closed circuit. The generator produces electricity for the same plasma with specific traction motor 20 times higher than that of chemical analogs.
