The program Ground Combat Vehicle: the impact of modernity on the future

In the middle of last May at the military base of Fort Bliss (Texas) was delivered four standard infantry fighting vehicles made by different companies. This armor was brought for comparative tests, the purpose of which was to find a more suitable Pentagon BMP. Directly to these tests, conducted from 17 to 25 May, were part of routine NDV (Not-Developmental Vehicle — Technology requires no development), which in turn is a component of programs from GCV (Ground Combat Vehicle — Ground combat vehicles).

The program GCV was started in 2009 after the cessation of work on the "Future Combat Systems» (Future Combat Systems — FCS). Cancel the previous applets had no effect on the need to re-equip the Army and the U.S. Marine Corps with the latest technology. Because of development on the section on programs from FCS were saved and applied to the GCV. At the same time, these 2-programs have a severe difference. Thus, FCS assumed uncontested establishment of a fully modern infantry fighting vehicle. GCV, in turn, implies just three variants of BMP. The first of them for rethinking the experience and practice of the use of this class of equipment. It was assumed that in certain cases, the role of battle and infantry can take on armored personnel carriers with suitable weapons. However, over time, Pentagon analysts have concluded that it is too early yet turn away from that kind of armor. Second way of BMP is to review and, potentially, the beginning of mass production combat vehicle that is already created and meets the requirements of the customer or can be quickly and easily brought into line with them. The third section of the same programs from GCV is the most complex, expensive and labor-intensive: the creation of a fully-date battle and infantry.

Past month back tests are part of the work on the second direction. So as new BMPs should go to the troops already in 2017, and the development of modern machines may take even longer time, it was decided again to compare and check the available types of vehicles. For the role in the program were invited to outright five companies that submitted five armored vehicles. BMP is the Israeli Namer, made on the basis of tank Merkava Mk4, Swedish CV9035 development of BAE Systems Hagglunds, General Dynamics Stryker SDVH and BMP M2A3 Bradley, in which BAE Systems lifted home a tower with an automatic gun. In addition, the committee responsible for the program from GCV NDV, were handed over documents on the German BMP Puma, but the actual reference to America did not get.

By completely understandable reasons, details on the nine-day trial were not disclosed. Yet, it is clear that all four cars delivered overcame specially prepared track with obstacles of various kinds, were then transported to the landfill White Sands, where the evaluation carried out the shooting. Worth seeing, comparative tests presented four armored personnel carriers — not the usual thing too far. They all have quite different structure, which pulls the mass effect. For example, we can compare the Israeli vehicle Namer and Swedish CV9035. So, "" intend, being processing of main battle tank Merkava Mk4, has protivosnaryadnuyu composite armor. CV9035, in turn, is able to protect the crew of "only" from the 14.5-mm armor-piercing bullets. But in the field of arms forward sees the Swedish development: its 30 — or 40-mm automatic cannon in its capabilities significantly exceed 12.7 mm M2HB machine gun or automatic grenade launcher Mk19, set to "intend to." The same is observed instability of the middle of the contestants and their fighting weight. The easiest of the contestants is Stryker SDVH with its 18 tons. In turn, Namer, as an obvious "descendant" of the tank, weighs all sixty.

In general, the comparison is so different machines, although belonging to the same class, it's quite complicated. But in some sense it is even a plus. The large spread in the properties — both in running and in combat — allows you to make the appropriate conclusions and further develop effective form BMP future. Naturally, it is unlikely either of what the various machines will be a model for all the characteristics of a promising design, but it will elect the general direction of development. In addition, in the event of failure of the planned date of the latest developments absolutely BMP programm NDV another take on a momentum of positive consequences in the form of purchases of existing armored vehicles for infantry to meet the requirements of the majority of currently available. But this development is only in this case the BAE Systems and General Dynamics does not cope with the responsibilities assigned to them.

Back in 2009, these companies have entrusted their projects to create BMP promising to equip the Army and Marine Corps. The relatively smooth running BAE Systems and GD is not subject, although sometimes different computer and share images and diagrams on the topic. Now on available disk imaging develops memory to continue the current trend of American infantry fighting vehicles. Presented at BAE Systems and General Dynamics apparently viewed images corresponding contours of the tower machine "Bradley" and similar to her arms. As for the chassis, in her case, you can follow the traditional scheme of the infantry fighting vehi
cle with the engine-transmission compartment at the front of the body and landing in the back. Of course, such an assembly — by the way, which is used by all the members except for routine NDV "Stryker" — will be the basis for that machine, which eventually will accept for service.

On the arms of new projects machines applets GCV read so far, but out of the materials should be the fact that it, too, will continue the "tradition." The main tool in the form of a 30 — or 40-mm automatic gun and an additional machine gun (7.62 or 12.7 mm) long since established itself in the best possible way, and the South American military is unlikely to go on a severe change in the set. Is that to the requirements of the receiver will be added to the armament wishes for automatic grenade launcher or anti-tank missiles. Yes, and this area is not something revolutionary new.

It is seen that test and develop infantry combat vehicles are not the only purpose applets GCV. In addition to this fact, BMP programm involves the creation on its base, and the so-called self-propelled howitzer secondary machine. Regarding self-propelled clear that caliber guns will be more than 100 mm, but on "secondary drive" is not clear yet virtually nothing. Now the military and engineers did not publish details about this type of disk imaging technology. Most likely, under such a weird term is understood as a universal platform for command and staff, public health, repair and recovery, and the similar machines. But the proof of this version has not happened. But the customer and the developer they say a lot about the requirements for electronics promising BMP. Communications, navigation and target machines must be fully compatible with the development now integrated communications and control BCT Network.

There is evidence that before the end of June and the month will be completed by the analysis of the acquired comparative test disk imaging. Then it all acquired data will be transferred to the appropriate departments of the Pentagon, and companies engaged in the development of new infantry fighting vehicles. Accordingly, the kind of projects can significantly change. At the same time, the adjustment of the projects is unlikely to be long-term and labor-intensive. Of course, the developers themselves in the face of GD and BAE Systems have long been working together with the military requirements of their development. But, unfortunately, the degree of adjustment of the draft in accordance with the results of the comparative tests on routine NDV can be read only when the customer and the developers deign to show the world not only ready to BMP, and working materials for the projects.
