In Ukraine, for the first time celebrating the Day of Ukrainian peacekeepers

Today, the 15th of July, for the first time in Ukraine celebrate Ukrainian peacekeepers.


21 years ago began the history of peacekeeping Ukrainian state. July 15th of 1992, two aircraft with an advanced group of the 240th separate special battalion of the first peacekeeping unit formed in Ukraine, Dnepropetrovsk took off from the airport and headed for Bosnia. From the first moments after landing in Sarajevo Ukrainians came to the epicenter of the fighting — the city and the airport were fired almost constantly heard explosions and shooting, working snipers.

At the 240th BSB in the 67 officers and warrant officers, 345 sergeants and soldiers have been tasked with the protection and operation of the airport, escort convoys with humanitarian aid both in the city and in the outlying areas of the country, the protection of the area of its location, the repair systems water and electricity.

Since then, participation in international peacekeeping operations was approximately 40,000 members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. 50 of them were killed in the performance of tasks.

Decision on establishing the Day of Ukrainian peacekeepers (project number 1165, author Kolesnichenko) The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted on May 21 of 2013.

Peacekeepers Day is set to "honor the courage and valor, exemplary performance of duty, loyalty oath members of UN peacekeeping operations, the OSCE and NATO, and the conservation of the glorious memory of the heroes of the peacekeepers who lost their lives in the performance of duties in the peacekeepers and peacekeeping personnel."
