January 24 in Warsaw, representatives of four PEN Club — Polish, Czech, Lithuanian and Chinese — have adopted a statement calling for release from prison of Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo and the Belarusian poet Vladimir Neklyaeva.
"In the face of Liu Xiaobo and Vladimir Neklyaeva we protect freedom of speech, human rights and civil liberties, we are defending civilization, "- said in a statement.
— This joint statement has no precedent in the history of the International PEN Club — said the "Gazeta Wyborcza" Adam Pomorski, Chairman of the Polish PEN. — We wrote it, because the current situation is exceptional. Yet this did not happen to have detained the head of any department of the national PEN. And in that moment sitting in jail two leaders, both — poets.
Earlier Nyaklyayeu was chairman of the Belarusian PEN Center.
