A powerful earthquake struck off Indonesia

A powerful earthquake hit on Tuesday, August 16, off the coast of Indonesia, the Associated Press reported, citing the service of the country's Meteorology and Geophysics.

According to preliminary estimates, the magnitude of the quake reached 6.5. The earthquake in the Indian Ocean, 547 km south-west of Bintan, located on the island of Sumatra, at a shallow depth — 10 km. The threat of a tsunami have not announced, the information is coming.

Recall that in early April in Indonesia experienced another powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.1. The earthquake lies at a depth of 24 km, the epicenter was located at a distance of 200 km to the south of the island of Java. Immediately after the earthquake authorities have warned the public about the threat of an emergency.

After 1.5 hours, scientists have not detected any signs of a tsunami, after which it was concluded that there is no danger of a strong tidal wave, which could threaten the inhabitants of coastal areas.

Indonesia is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire — a strip of active volcanoes, bordering the Pacific Ocean along the tectonic fault. The region is characterized by high seismic activity.
