A life-threatening intestinal infection recorded in the north of Germany. Ill for more than 130 people.
Doctors say "very unusual" the disease, about 40 of the 130 cases we are talking about a very serious condition of patients, two of them connected to a respirator.
The infection causes the so-called enterogemorragichnaya bacterium Escherichia coli (EHEC).
"The number of severe cases in such a short time is very unusual," — said the Robert Koch Institute.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the bacterium Escherichia coli is often present in the gut of humans and warm-blooded animals. Most of its strains are harmless, but some strains, such as, for example, E. coli (EHEC), can cause severe foodborne illness.
Is transmitted to humans primarily through consumption of contaminated foods, such as raw or semi-moist meat products and raw milk.
Symptoms caused by bacteria EHEC, — bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Most patients recover within 10 days, but a small number of patients (especially young children and the elderly), the infection may progress to severe life-threatening. According to doctors, most patients in Germany — middle-aged women.
