UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Piley expressed deep concern over the verdict Basil Parfiankou. "Prosecution and punishment is particularly alarming given the fact that, along with dozens of other activists, he appeared in court for the realization of the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression," — quoted Piley's Justices of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Piley noted in Belarus the terms and conditions of detention pending trial not meet the standards of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. In particular, she said, the question of extending the period of detention decided prosecutor, not a judge.
"We have also received reports of continued intimidation of lawyers who provide legal assistance to detainees and journalists," — said the High Commissioner. She drew attention to the fact that the Belarusian Ministry of Justice annulled the licenses of at least three lawyers, who "defended the opposition leaders and a journalist."
"Human rights defenders must be able to carry out their work in a safe environment, without exposing themselves to the risk and fear of reprisals, intimidation, threats and naveshvannya labels — said Piley. — States should protect human rights defenders, journalists and civil society from threats, retaliation or pressure, if they are a consequence of their legitimate efforts to protect Human Rights . "
Navanethem Piley called on the Belarusian authorities to release political prisoners, including former presidential candidates, and to comply with international obligations in the field of human rights. It noted the lack of proper cooperation between Belarus and the United Nations Committee on Human Rights.
Situation in Belarus on February 13 in Moscow discussed Navanethem Piley and representatives of the international observation mission of the Committee on International Control over the Human Rights Situation in Belarus.
Commissioner materials were transferred to the mission on human rights defenders, lawyers and journalists in Belarus, prepared jointly with the Belarusian organizations.
