In 1954, the Australian ship "Rachel Cohen" fell to overhaul one of the docks in Adelaide. Repairs began with the "spring-cleaning". Undertook to clean the bottom of the ship from the shells, and found 17 large teeth stuck in the skin. Everyone — 8 x 10 cm
In the history of the Earth such teeth could boast of only one "fish" — Megalodon. One problem: it became extinct 1.5 million years ago. Or not?
On the face of terrible, the same within
26,500,000 years bloodthirsty giant shark known as the megalodon (Carcharodon megalodon), reigned in the world's oceans. Nothing worse than nature has not yet created. Scientists estimate that the long Megalodon reached from 20 to 30 meters! And weighed from 50 to 100 tons. His favorite food was baleen whales and sperm whales, which it is a bite, they say, at times.
Can you imagine the size of the mouth of this monstrous fish, if the 10-meter-long whale was her ordinary object of the hunt? These superhischniki stood on the top of the food chain. And, if I may say so, to keep at bay all aquatic life.
Huge teeth, which are found throughout the ocean, which means incredibly wide dispersal megalodon are triangular in shape and resembles a shark. The only difference is in the scale. The tooth of the largest — the great white shark — not more than 6 cm while the Megalodon leanest "Fang" is 10 cm, well, normal size for them — 17-18 cm
Actually, this is something for scientists and chives were able to reconstruct approximately the size and shape of the predator, for the largest specimens were female — "megalodonihi." First, reconstructed jaw, and then — "figure", taking into account the fact that the nearest relative of the megalodon is the great white shark. The result was a such "great white", but more "big-boned", but also fascinated by the steroids: scary-looking skeleton now adorns the Maritime Museum of Maryland (USA).
Pass by and not shudder in horror — it is simply impossible. Baggy skull, massive jaws and a short, blunt snout — look unattractive. As a joke ichthyologists, "on the face of megalodon was a pig." Next to this giant of a man feels just a grain of sand. And from the look on the 2-meter jaw with 5 rows of teeth, creepy. One is forced to rejoice that these monsters are no more in the ocean.
But is it really there? It's just a big question.
From a geological point of view, extinct animals recognize when the signs of their presence is not detected for over 400 000 years. But let's not forget about the Australian ship "Rachel Cohen": analysis showed that the teeth found in the bottom of the ship, really belonged to the megalodon. Well, let's say, that was a hoax. But what about the findings of paleontologists and ichthyologists?
Last Megalodon teeth found in the vicinity of Tahiti and in our Baltic Sea were dated almost as a "youth" — they were given to 11 thousand years. They do not even have time to turn to stone as it should! Feel the difference: 1.5 million — and 11,000 years! Do not forget to take into account the fact that the oceans studied by only 10%. So it may be that somewhere out there — deep — and even these are found "charming small fish."
You say that the giant shark could not have gone unnoticed? Leave pride. Deep-sea shark, known as megamouth, mankind discovered until 1976. And then quite by accident: one fish caught in the anchor chain of a research vessel in the waters near the island of Oahu (Hawaii). Since then 36 years have passed, but for all this time mouthed shark seen only 25 times — and even then only in the form of dead bodies on the coast.
Goblin shark, also known as the "nickname" goblin, discovered its presence in the world's oceans in 1897. And before that was considered extinct for a long time, and hopeless.
And the whale shark people first "zapelengovat" in 1828, until the time remaining in blissful ignorance of its existence.
Besides scanning the oceans nobody spent. And the coast Megalodon ever closer — will not allow impressive size. So this is a deep-water shark lifestyle. As far as deep-sea? Good question. Sperm whales, for example, the largest known to science carnivorous animals can dive to a depth of 3 km and feel fine there: water pressure them uneasy. However, they have to rise to the surface — for a breath of air. Megalodon and it's useless: oxygen supply their gills. So early, too early to write them out of the list of the living!
Meeting with the "perfect"
A weighty argument in favor of "persistence" Megalodon gives in his book "Sharks and Rays of Australia Seas" (1963) is a renowned Australian ichthyologist — David George Stead.
In 1918, he worked in the civil service and was responsible for commercial fishing in the waters of southern Australia. And it hastily summoned from the port Stevenson local fishermen refuse to go into the sea, frightened to death a huge fish — need to consult a specialist. Stead rushed to attend. As the questioning of fishermen, he found out the following.
Following once and for all routine, early morning lobster catchers went for the trap set by the previous day. Arrived at the scene — the island Bruton. The divers went down into the water to attach a hook to motor boats. The rest of the team quietly awaited their return. However, the divers went up immediately. In a panic, they had climbed on deck, shouting in different voices: "Shark! The basking shark! Immediately swim away from here! "
Indeed, the surface of the water anglers discern the outlines of a horrible huge fish. Not wasting a second, they rushed to leave a scary place. And coming to himself with horror, the divers said that, going down to the bottom, they saw an incredibly large ashy white shark. That devoured placed traps with langoustine and did not stop it or for chains or ropes.
According to the stories of fishermen appeared that the shark reached a 35-meter length. Her head was the size of a barn roof for boats.
Ichthyologist not immediately believe fishermen: common sense tells him that the megalodon (and judging by the size of the shark, it could be the only one) could not rise again, and announced in Australian waters. On the other hand, Stead aware of: the fishermen have no reason to lie and to shy away from work because of the catch depends on their revenue. In addition to invent such a story needed a certain amount of imagination. Fishermen were also experienced sailors, not dreamers.
So as a scientist Stead suffered a complete fiasco: he could neither deny nor confirm the word lobster catchers. For themselves ichthyologist concluded, we can not exclude the fact that the Megalodon still live in the oceans. And, you know, we tend to agree with him. Who knows what it hides — is the deep blue sea?
