February 14 St. Valentine's Day with activists of sexual minorities held in Minsk rally against homophobia in the Belarusian society. This action has been allowed by the authorities for the first time. The picket lasted for about 5 minutes. Such brevity of the organizers explained the frosty weather.
In the deserted park picketers were able to hear and see only journalists and members of the security bodies in civilian clothes.
Guest's "Night of Freedom" — the participant picket against homophobia Olesya Andriyevskaya.
Sous: Why did you decide to attend the picket?
Andriyevskaya: I decided to take part in the rally because it is very common among the population observed manifestations of negative sentiment regarding the gay community and lesbian community. I would like to say that it is wrong, and it should not be. Society must understand that it is natural.
Sous: Do you often have to deal with the manifestations of homophobia?
Andriyevskaya: To be honest, I myself do not often sutrakayusya manifestations of homophobia. Still, not directly, but indirectly, I see it quite often. Even on the Internet, in some conversations, correspondence it appears.
Sous: Today's action against homophobia was allowed by the authorities for the first time. What do you think — why?
Andriyevskaya: Frankly, speculated. It happened unexpectedly for us, we were even at a loss. Perhaps this is due to the fact that we are often applied for a picket and eventually corrected itself as a statement that it was her influence on the content of the resolution.
Sous: We asked visitors to the site today, "Freedom", why the authorities for the first time allowed to picket sexual minorities. Distributed as follows. "The authorities have decided to fight against homophobia" — so says 2.6 percent of the survey participants, "wanted to show the West their tolerance" — almost 65%, "just got it wrong" — 32.5%. Whatever the answer would be added to the poll you?
Andriyevskaya: As I said, we may just very well have applied. It has been written correctly. It is also possible that Belarus wants to somehow improve their image in front of Europe after the election, they say, we are not that bad. We see here, let do something.
Sous: Do you think that homophobia is characteristic of an authoritarian society?
Andriyevskaya: Frankly, I believe that homophobia can arise in any society. This may be in a democratic and totalitarian society, but nevertheless, I believe that in a democratic society homophobes will be less in percentage terms. After all, in such a society more information. And we have it hushed up, officially we do not have gays and lesbians. Inform the authorities are silent.
Sous: With regard is homophobic and is part of the power and the opposition, which is just against violations of human rights. What do you think, why is this happening?
Andriyevskaya: In fact, for me is very strange when people demand freedom of expression, freedom of choice, but it does not take into account the rights of others. But I still think this is probably due to the fact that half of the opposition — the nationalists, and this is due gomafobnasts. Again — this is an incomplete understanding of the causes of homosexuality.
