Santorini volcano prepares for new eruption

Santorini volcano that has caused the death of the Minoan civilization on Crete and probably ruined the legendary Atlantis, awakened after years of hibernation. Researchers believe that may soon happen next large-scale eruption with devastating effects.

The last eruption of Santorini relatively low recorded in 1950. Major did not occur for several thousand years. However, recent studies have shown that the volcano, located on the same island in the Aegean Sea, began to increase activity. Sensors installed on Santorini GPS, which in the period from January to June last year, moved by 5 -32 mm. Last fall, it was two more sensors. By January 2012 they moved to 180 millimeters. This indicates an increase in the activity of geologic processes.

According to oceanographers, soil variations in Santorini due to the fact that at a depth of 2.5-3 km from the surface of accumulated about 14 million cubic meters of magma. Although these processes are not necessarily spill over into eruption, scientists have not ruled out that possibility. In their view, even a small explosion on Santorini can cause dangerous ash emissions, landslides and tsunamis.

According to George Andrew Newman Geophysics Institute of Technology, it is impossible to determine exactly whether there will be an eruption of Santorini. Each volcano different, so use the data on other volcanoes to him impossible.

That volcano of Santorini, in the opinion of some researchers, killed the legendary Atlantis. According to one version, the island of Atlantis was located in the Mediterranean Sea, so it is likely that his undoing eruption that occurred about 12,000 years ago.

There is another version that Atlantis was called the Minoan civilization that existed in the years 2600-1450 BC on the island of Crete. Scientists have found that about 3,600 years ago in Santorini eruption, which was accompanied by a massive explosion. It has caused a giant tsunami that destroyed the Minoans of Crete.

It should be noted that recently, scientists have discovered a link on Santorini explosion on one of the Egyptian plagues, as mentioned in the Bible. After the disaster in the atmosphere got tons of volcanic ash that closed the sun. This phenomenon Egyptians named the punishment sent by God: "… and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days: They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days."
