The magnitude of the earthquake was 9.0, it was the largest earthquake in Alaska in 1964 (9.2 points), and fourth in power since 1900. The epicenter was located in the Indian Ocean, north of Simeulue island, located near the northwest coast of the island of Sumatra (Indonesia). Tsunami headed for the coast of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, southern India, Thailand and other countries. The height of the waves exceeded 15 meters. Tsunami has led to great destruction and many people died, including in Port Elizabeth in South Africa in 6900 km from the epicenter.
