Area of oil pollution for the year decreased by almost 2 times

The total area of soil contamination with oil products in Russia in the past year decreased as compared to 2011 nearly doubled, according to the forecast of the Centre "Antistikhia" Emergencies Ministry in 2013.

"The total area of soil pollution by oil and oil products in Russia (for the first 11 months of 2012) amounted to 40.94 thousand hectares, which is 1.7 times lower than in 2011 (71.48 thousand)" — according to the document.

Sources of pollution, according to the agency, were also production and consumption waste, including illegal dumps of solid waste and liquid waste.

Cases have been reported in the Primorsky and Stavropol regions, Mordovia, Tatarstan, and the Amur and Magadan regions.
