Chelyabinsk car can be classified as superbolides — scientist

Chelyabinsk car appears in the list of the most powerful of the four Russian superbolides observed in the XXI century. The first was the Vitim (25 September 2002), the second — the car in the Komi Republic (17 October 2009), the third — Osa car (March 1, 2011, Irkutsk region).

Director of the Astronomical Observatory of Irkutsk State University Sergei Yazev carries a heavenly body, whose fall was observed in the Urals, on Friday, a meteoroid, its mass could be up to 100 tons, the size of about four meters, power energy — around three kilotons of TNT.

In his blog Yaz compared Chelyabinsk Vitim bolide with those observed in the north of the Irkutsk region in September 2002.

"Previously we can say that energy release Chelyabinsk car is clearly not less, and probably more than the Vitim. This means that the Chelyabinsk car, which should be classified as superbolides issued at least three kilotons of TNT, and this the most conservative estimate, "- says Yaz blog.

According to him, the Chelyabinsk car looks in the list of the most powerful of the four Russian superbolides observed in the XXI century. The first was the Vitim (25 September 2002), the second — the car in the Komi Republic (17 October 2009), the third — Osa car (March 1, 2011, Irkutsk region).

In the media it was reported earlier that the flight of a meteorite fireball ended in Lake Chebarkul. "I believe that this is unlikely. Judging by thick vapor trail, fall into the lake was nothing left," — says Yaz. He believes that the destruction of the cosmic body was at high altitude.

"We are faced with a rare opportunity to follow superbolides densely populated areas. Chelyabinsk superbolides can finally turn public opinion in the direction of a serious study of the problem of asteroid and comet hazard, which has long been the astronomers say, and they do not believe," — says Yaz.
