Jack London predicted the destruction of humanity in 2013

Prophetic novel "The Scarlet Plague" 100 years. One of the first in the history of world literature dystopia and one of the most famous works of Jack London, the magazine was published in London Magazine in 1912.

Now his story seems straightforward. At the beginning of XXI century epidemic swept the world of a mysterious disease. People died during the day, survived one in a million. Civilization was lost in a matter of days. The novel is set 60 years after the events.

The main character — an old man, sitting on the wild coast, near San Francisco, tells his grandson goatherd of the days when the former world died. The most amazing thing in the work that Jack London described the striking precision Earth early XXI century.

The "election" of President

"… The old man was frustrated, and held the coin close to the eyes.

— Two thousand twelve, — he said and quickly muttered: — This is the year when the Board has appointed Morgan magnates Fifth President of the United States. This coin is probably the last coin. After the Scarlet Death came in two thousand thirteenth year! God! God! Think of it. Sixty years ago, it was all that, and I'm the only person who lived in those times. Where did you find it, Edwin? "

As you know, in November, to take place in the U.S. presidential election. But supporters of the various conspiracy theories have long argued that the United States, and thus the whole world secretly managed a handful of financiers and politicians. This is the so-called closed Bohemian Club, which is almost all the financial and political elite of the United States. The club is located in a privately owned near San Francisco. Once a year, all the "bohemians" come here. What they were doing — is unknown. Officially, people go on vacation, but many believe that there is to solve important problems of world politics.

How many people live on the planet

"… — The whole world was inhabited by people. Census of two thousand and ten showed eight billion. The man then know more about procuring food. It was not like it is now. And the food was more and more people. Eight billion people living on Earth, when it came Scarlet death … "

Jack London is not much wrong — at the beginning of September this year, according to the UN, on the planet were about 7 billion 100 thousand. Given the fact that at the time of the writer humans was only about 1.6 billion, he was a good prophet.

"The Scarlet Plague" — Ebola?

"… — It was the summer of two thousand thirteenth year, when the plague came. I was then twenty-seven years old and I remember it all. Radio …

Cleft lip loudly expressed his displeasure and Grenser hurried to recover:

— In those days, we talked through the air for thousands of miles. And the news about the appearance in New York of some strange disease. In this remarkable city in America was seventeen million people. But cases of this disease, there were only a few, and nobody really thought about it, it seemed a trifle. True, it appeared that died surprisingly fast, and the first sign of a new disease was spread scarlet rash all over his body and face. In less than twenty-four hours, as word spread of the first case in Chicago … "

In this passage, several predictions. First, in the words of the old man can see the hint of a cellular or satellite. Then — about the population of New York City: the writer believes that it was 17 million. In fact, in the Big Apple and its suburbs now live 18.8 million. But maybe there are simply not taken into account by the U.S. invasion of illegal emigrants? And most importantly — the disease. Symptoms of "scarlet plague" are much like symptoms of Ebola. The virus was discovered in 1976 in the Congo. The mortality rate — up to 90%. There were several outbreaks of the disease (the last time, last week, 31 people died of the Congo — Ed.). One of the first symptoms — rash on the body of a fine red-pink rash. Vaccines against Ebola does not exist.

…and a few predictions

"… I was all alone in his big house. As I have already said, at the time, we could talk to each other on the wire, or simply through the air. Phone rang and I heard the voice of my brother … "

It seems that once again we are talking about mobile communication.

"… Twenty-four hours, he said that no longer appear transatlantic airplanes — sever ties with Britain …"

I recall, during the writing of the novel (1912) before the first flight across the Atlantic was still 15 years old. A regular passenger service between the continents was established after World War II.

Not all is lost?

In "Scarlet Plague" Jack London paints a grim picture of the bloody feral world. Yet in this book is optimistic writer, his faith in man. He argues that the man still more exalted and subdue nature. Believe that?

"… We have created our planet — land, sea and sky — the former masters of life, we live now primitive barbarians along the Gulf of California. But we quickly multiply — your sister, cleft lip, had four children. We multiply rapidly and are beginning to slow to a crawl to civilization. When we become close to live, and it will force us to spread further and further, and generation after generation will be spread slowly across the continent to the east — New Aryans fill the world … "
