Earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred on Friday in the Indian state of Assam in the north-east of the country, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.
According to seismologists, the epicenter of the quake was located 113 kilometers from the city of Guwahati. The earthquake lies at a depth of 11.5 kilometers.
Guwahati is the commercial and educational center of the region, where a number of world-class research institutions, in particular, the Indian Institute of Technology.
According to the newspaper Times of India, the tremors were felt in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) — the second largest city in India.
