The conversation with the correspondent "VC" scientist began:

— In 1944 in Kazan Eugene Zavoiskii discovered the phenomenon of electron spin resonance, and this event still has a major influence on the development of science. And three years later, the University of Oxford is a phenomenon observed pancakes. After ten years of the EPR in the world has developed in only two places — in Kazan and Oxford. So Russia and England — these are "primary sources" of the EPR.


— As the awards ceremony took place?

— The award was presented in Manchester, as part of the 45th annual international conference of the EPR spectroscopy of the Royal Chemical Society of Great Britain. March 27, a special session. Professor Robert Beetle from the Free University of Berlin, introducing me, I remembered a significant episode for me. In 1992, at the international congress of Ampere I made a report, which gave a certain scientific outlook. Then he did not believe, for discussion was specially organized a round table where I had to defend my position. A few months later the same Beatle and two other members of Congress experimentally confirmed that I was right … So, I handed the diploma director of the Department of the EPR "Brooker" and then I made an hour and a half lecture. The fact that this type of award can be translated as "the election of honorary lecturer," and it involves a whole act, which includes a lecture and a celebration of the winner.

— And what was devoted to your lecture?

— The idea was that for several years in the KFTI KSC RAS we are trying to make a quantum computer. Transistors, where he works, will be essentially new elements — the electron spins. A quantum computer will solve problems that modern computers can not do. We could perform a quantum teleportation — this is including a new way of transmitting information over a distance, based on the principles of quantum mechanics. I have tried to present his vision of the problem, there were plenty of questions. And on that day, and now continue to receive letters from those who were at the lecture. Award of the Royal Society of Chemistry-rated I think not only of their activities, but also in the whole of the Kazan school of EPR. We work hard to ensure that, in fact, Kazan Fiztekh became an outstanding center of the EPR in the world and has been recognized as such.

— What other perspective is EPR?

— This is my favorite question. To answer this question, I recently published a book in English, "EPR: from basic research to advanced applications," in the creation of which was attended by 105 professors from all over the world. I will say this: there is no limit development. The last 10 — 15 years of going through the EPR time of the Renaissance, literally a rebirth. Now as for your question. The EPR method, in particular, allows to date archaeological finds under the age of 1.5 million years, whereas for the commonly used method of carbon-30 000 years — is the limit. With the ESR can predict for how long the product will retain its quality.

The method can be used to select optimum water treatment systems. EPR gives you real-time to see how the biological mechanisms at the molecular level, and this opens up tremendous possibilities for the use of the method in medicine. We are working on EPR imaging, which in particular gives good results in oximetry — measuring the quantity of oxygen in a specific point of the body. This study, in turn, is essential, for example, treatments based on the radiation exposure. Depending on the concentration of oxygen in the cells can be judged whether there is benefit from treatment, or the body is harmed.

— But in our country, such projects are supported?

— Good question. Unfortunately, the answer to me at him hard. You say not supported, can someone be offended. You say supported — ask, and where it is, this support. Not only in the country, equal such situation. Where we have a balanced policy in the field of science, and even more — at work? The laws of the market and competition — that's great. But, unfortunately, it happened that science can not be expected from the instant results. Open once something unprecedented — it seldom happens. And often we can talk about how to create a technology that has counterparts abroad, but his own, and in that case, you need to do better than that of foreign producers. And to make it on their own, without the investment, although it is a matter of national security: the country must have their aircraft, computers, medical equipment.
