Like a pair of iron bird was rescued from Elbrus

Once we gradually accustomed to the idea that everything we do is bad. The country, they say, is not the one in the government of the plutocrats, and there are no heroes in our country. Do not believe that we have a lot of normal people who quietly do their work worthy of the highest words.
Recently lucky to meet such a person. Vladimir Horeb, the test pilot enterprise "ROSTVERTOL." Under his leadership, conducted a unique operation: from the top of Mount Elbrus were removed two helicopter crash victims. At the same time it was established seven world records at once! Under the cut pictures and a story about this operation.

…Military Mi-8 helicopter fell on the northern slope of Mount Elbrus July 27, 2010 as a result of the so-called air-bullying. The pilots decided to work out how to plant rotary-wing aircraft in the mountains at the maximum altitude is not obtained the sanction of command, without adequate preparation. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the car remained lying on its side, with the tail boom broken off, at an altitude of 4820 meters above sea level.

It so happens that the helicopter lying near the tourist trail, in which the ascent of Elbrus foreign climbers. Germans, French, Austrians gladly photographed on a background of falling car with red stars on board. The question immediately became political. The decision to evacuate the helicopter was taken at the level of government that is clothed in the form of the order of Commander of the Air Force.

In our Air Force pilots are excellent. But pull on the external sling load juggernaut with nearly five thousand mark (it is close to the limit of height for helicopters) for them too difficult task. Therefore, the military asked for help to the company "Rostvertol". To carry out this operation was entrusted to test pilot, colonel Vladimir Horeb.

Like many pilots, the love of the sky at Horeva since childhood. In Syzran Military Aviation School enrolled in the army conscripts. Learned to fly on the "Mil" machines — "Baby" Mi-2 and Mi-8 universal. In the "eight" Horeb immediately fell in love. The helicopter he considers one of the most successful in the world aircraft industry. The layout, capacity, performance characteristics make it a multi-purpose: it is the military, and transport vehicle, capable of reliably high in the mountains and in the hot desert.

At its "eight" Khorev flew in the Carpathian Military District, was twice sent to Afghanistan. There had landed troops to evacuate the wounded, fly at night on the "free hunt". Double Vladimir Khorev pulled from under the nose of "spirits" of our crews hit by a car. In memory of Afghanistan remained the Order of the Red Banner, and two Orders of the Red Star, and even friendship with the rescued pilots: They call up every year in a memorable date.
That's why heart ached with pity when he saw Khorev lying helplessly on the side of the Mi-8: like a baby bird that had fallen out of the nest. How is it possible to save, how to get from such a height?

The first aerial survey of the accident Khorev performed by helicopter Mi-26 (known as the "cow" for a large roomy womb) at the end of August 2010. But a huge machine (the world record for carrying capacity) and could not hang over who lay helicopter, although the engine is running at maximum takeoff power. Screws just do not catch on the thin air, the machine went down, sometimes critically approaching with rocks.
Then it was decided to have surgery on a cold season. In August, the temperature at the top of Elbrus was at zero. And in sub-zero values of thrust rotorcraft is greatly increased.

We had Horeva years experience in the mountains: in Pakistan, where he was delivering "humanitarian aid" after a strong earthquake. Or in China to the mountainous terrain Horeva helicopter external load endured by heavy construction equipment to save the 86-minute crumbling miners in the mine. But on Elbrus was a different height. And Khorev understood: under these conditions, the slightest miscalculation in piloting, or an accident, such as a gust of wind or getting into the zone of warmer air will lead to the fact that the 33-ton Mi-26 crash on the rocks.
Therefore, the operation was extended in March 2011, when the temperature was 15-20 degrees below zero.

At an altitude of 2500 meters was broken ground, "Basic", which was taken by air tanker. At the beginning, with a minimum of "goryuchku" in tanks, Khorev circled the crash site, the examples of the terrain and air flows. Then the car was filled with the estimated amount of fuel — to determine the maximum weight that at this altitude can take the external load. As the flow goryuchku Mi-26 behaved more and more confident, and empirically determined that it can raise under these conditions, the two and a half tons of cargo. Fallen Mi-8 weighs seven tons. So, we had to disassemble it and take out piece by piece.

Elbrus arrived a landing of military experts from Budennovsk. They had to disassemble the helicopter. For them to Elbrus were delivered container with tools and two-ton-kung booth where you can warm up and spend the night. The operation was postponed again — until the autumn.

And in June, Elbrus, at an altitude of 3500 meters, just two crashed helicopter. The first, due to an error in piloting, dropped a small P-44 "Robinson", which went for rich tourists. Following this, almost side by side, because of the difficult weather conditions fell Ka-27 Southern search rescue center, who flew to the rescue. Fortunately no one was killed, people were evacuated. Very fast search service pulled from the mountain road "Robinson" (he weighed not much). The heavier the Ka-27 remained on the mountain. Rescuers appealed to the command of the 4th Air Army "together" pull their car, once recovery team works at Mt. And such a "good" was given …

Rotorcraft are taught to fly slowly, step by step. The work cycle of the new helicopter goes first in each shop, where, without the "hot" start carefully checked the equipment installed. Then at the flight test station for a long time and carefully checks the operation of the engine, was necessary to regulate all systems. Finally comes the great day: a new car off the ground. The first flight, usually a ten-hovering in the air at a low altitude. From the pilot test requires a lot of patience, focus, shutter speed, so as not to miss the slightest deviation in behavior is not yet fledged bird.

Surely the same concentration required to Vladimir Horeb in the decisive day of October 27, when he was evacuated to the Mi-8, lying almost at the top of Mount Elbrus. In one crew worked with him: the co-pilot of torzhka Dmitry Zipir, Rostov "voenvedovskie" helicopter — Dmitry Kononov navigator, flight engineer Denis Koshurnikov, Vitaly Morgunovsky flight operator.

Heavy machine inch by inch approached the side of the mountain, touching the stones left wheel chassis. Parachuted to earth group of installers. The second run, podtsepka cargo. Engines went out for a maximum take-off, and the Mi-26 was hanging as tied to the place. The checkweigher is shown on the external load value — three thousand pounds, instead of the expected settlement of two thousand.

The threat of an accident. The Mi-26 was able to raise the fuselage "eight" is just a meter from the ground, while it was necessary to climb and move cargo through the ridge of rocks and a 15-meter cliff.

Immediately after analyzing the situation, Khorev decides on the production of fuel at the lowest possible hover to 1,100 kilograms. After that, the goods were to drag on the ice chute through a narrow cleft in the rocks. The task was complicated by the fact that the external load hanging on the top of the fuselage to spin a strong stream of air, which is formed by the main rotor.

Cargo swung on ropes and flew away from the rocks. It seemed that trouble is inevitable. Horeb tried to fend off this swinging, sliding control knob. The lack of oxygen, lack of engine power compounded complexity of the visual orientation: Skyline was distorted slope of Mount Elbrus.

When the fuel remainder of 1150 kilograms of machine control has improved slightly. Horeb decided to take off. When the fuselage of "eight" is smoothly passed through the stone gates, the crew of the 26th sigh of relief. The car came to the slope of the glacier, and rushed down, increasing speed. Rotor got extra traction, and finally the Mi-26 switched to the normal flight mode.

The primary and the most heavy load was carefully laid on the ground. In the last drops of fuel Mi-26 touched down on the platform "Basic."
The rest of it was a matter of technique. Last pulled the tail boom, which thoroughly frozen into the ice, but it managed to wrest Horeb. After putting weight on the slope, he shifted the helicopter pilot slightly higher ground to pick up the group. When Major Yershov and Perov captain jumped into the belly of the Mi-26 helicopter lifted into the air cargo, carrying evacuees last part of the "eight". On this flight on the world's most mountainous area for the heaviest in the world of the Mi-26 over.

The next day, October 28, Rostov pulled the Ka-27, which was lying on the scree at the base of the glacier at an altitude of 3500 meters. Weight of the machine was seven tons, but from this height, it is estimated the commander of the crew, the Ka-27 can be pulled out without removing the units. Enveloped in snow dust, Mi-26 took on the suspension fallen brother, gently lifted him above the rock ridge and headed for the platform "Basic."

The task was accomplished. During evacua
tion operations on Elbrus crew VV Horeva was set seven world records related to the heavy helicopter piloting and delivery of goods to the heights of 4820 and 3500 meters. Currently Vladimir Horeb to the rank of Hero of Russia and the other members of this operation — to the state awards.

October 28, 1999 in Vladivostok visited the then Prime Minister of Russia Vladimir Putin, he was shown the possibility of "Black Shark" (helicopter piloted Horeb, then working at the air carrier in Arsenyev.) "As it should, before visiting us guys looked out of personal protection premier. Checked the helicopter, and when they learned that the" Black Shark "only one seat for the pilot, breathed a sigh of relief: the glory of God, and then head back to ask to become cockpit, fly, — says Vladimir Horeb.

When were performed demonstration flights, Vladimir Putin, Vladimir Khorev shook his hand and gave the commemorative watches. Good gold watches "Russian." On the back of the inscription: "From the Government of the Russian Federation." "Putin's" got to watch Khorev October 28, the birthday of the Russian Army Aviation. And another date fell on this day: Oct. 28, 2011 Rostov pilots completed the rescue operation at Mt.

All thoughts of Vladimir Horeva the sky — when he is at work. A family home waiting for him: a wife, two adult children and grandchildren. And he has a hobby: the guitar. As a child, Vladimir graduated from music school, but was not a guitarist, and a pilot. But the guitar is still in my life persists, and Vladimir picks it up when going to a bunch of friends. More often than not, "a singing pilot" sings songs about the sky.
