Photo: RIA NovostiThe number of cases of cholera in the Dominican Republic — a favorite holiday region of Russian tourists — continues to grow, at last count, 139 people were infected, while in neighboring Haiti, where a raging epidemic of cholera have already died, more than 3.3 thousand people, RIA Novosti Chief Medical Officer Gennady Onishchenko.

"The number went to a doctor in Haiti has exceeded 150,000 people, more than 3.3 thousand people died. Dominican Republic in 139 patients with cholera," — he said.

Earlier, Onishchenko said that on December 23 in the Dominican Republic were 27 hospitalizations due to cholera. Cases have been identified in all provinces of the country.

"CPS continues to monitor air travelers returning from the region. Today surveyed 19 000 800 people, while all normal," — said the head of department.

Earlier Onishchenko noted that, judging by the pace and scale of the spread of cholera in Haiti, the world is "on the threshold of the 21st century's first cholera pandemic," and recalled that in the twentieth century, there were seven cholera pandemics.
