The number of cases of cholera in the Dominican Republic — a favorite holiday region of Russian tourists — continues to grow, at last count, 139 people were infected, while in neighboring Haiti, where a raging epidemic of cholera have already died, more than 3.3 thousand people, RIA Novosti Chief Medical Officer Gennady Onishchenko.

Earlier, Onishchenko said that on December 23 in the Dominican Republic were 27 hospitalizations due to cholera. Cases have been identified in all provinces of the country.

Earlier Onishchenko noted that, judging by the pace and scale of the spread of cholera in Haiti, the world is "on the threshold of the 21st century's first cholera pandemic," and recalled that in the twentieth century, there were seven cholera pandemics.
