Looking plates, flying through the long corridors of history, I found a very dark and winding paths. Did I mention that the superstitious ideas of past times often prevent us distinguish phenomena such as false sun, mirages, aurora, etc.
As each of these categories, we found and flying saucers, we should not be too severely condemn our ancestors. We should not blame them for not understanding the simplest things, even though sometimes they were given free rein to his imagination, perhaps because of their colorful descriptions of swords and armies appearing in the heavens, pouring out blood, severed heads and wings of angels more fantastic than our understanding of the UFOs as interplanetary aircraft.
I have already given some strange reports of unusual celestial phenomena observed in the XV, and XVI centuries, and even earlier. The legends and folk tales often appear fiery spirits, sometimes with a very real basis in the phenomena associated with UFOs. We can serve as a consolation known fact that not only us, but other generations were horrified by the plates.
Prior to an 1440 printing press was invented, historical records or passed from mouth to mouth, or carefully written by hand chroniclers.
Many of the documents are lost or killed. Some manuscripts are not transcribed, for foreign language translations of the Middle Ages is very difficult. Without a dictionary or special management even English of Chaucer us almost incomprehensible. From ancient works have survived only a few, such as "Natural History" by Pliny. Here we find all sorts of stories and a lot of tall tales brought from distant countries and taken for granted by Pliny. Thus, its natural history — this is a very peculiar mixture of facts and fables, which never existed animals like dragons and unicorns live with our familiar denizens of fields and forests.
We have already seen that the description of meteors in Pliny is incomplete, but we have every reason to believe that the whole meteorology in general marking time until at least XVI or XVII century before.
Looking for the earliest reports of flying saucers, I remembered the story of Ezekiel's wheels. Might not these wheels by any chance, be UFOs? The Bible is very clear and vivid story of many weather phenomena, such as storms, thunder, lightning and a rainbow. What is the wheel of Ezekiel? Is it just the characters or, perhaps, images associated with some kind of natural phenomena?
Many of the events, which tells Ezekiel, are in line with the known historical facts, and we can even say that he lived around 600 BC. e. As a young man, a priest in Jerusalem, Ezekiel was captured and hijacked a small village not far from Babylon or Nippur on the Euphrates River. In all that Ezekiel wrote, melancholy sounds of the city of his youth, as he is forced to live in a country that was essentially a vast desert. He is a vision, and sometimes it was terrible pictures like valley filled with bones (37.1-14).
If Ezekiel, speaking of some of the visions that describe familiar objects and phenomena, or at least what he had seen and what we can understand why his first vision can not be a flying saucer?
In Ezekiel there are some phrases in which it is clearly talking about some kind of atmospheric phenomena, such as rainbows of different colors — fiery, amber, topaz (bright glow from orange to white), and finally, sapphire (blue).
First, I wanted to explain that vision just like a regular night mirage, but the brightness of colors said that this phenomenon occurred in the afternoon.
Ezekiel's vision is so consistent with the contemporary descriptions of false suns, surrounded by a halo, which, in my opinion, it is immediately evident. Compliance is so great that it simply can not be overlooked.
On the celestial wheels that appeared to him in a vision, Ezekiel tells us twice: first in Chapter 1, and then in chapter 10. Although they are largely repetitive, small differences and additional facts confirm the identity of these phenomena.
And I saw, and behold a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it,
and out of the midst thereof as the color of amber, out of the midst of fire, and out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures, — And this was their appearance: they were as a person, and each — four faces, and every one of them — four wings
and their feet — legs straight, and the soles of their absorption — as sole of a calf's foot: and they sparkled like burnished brass (and the wings of the lungs).
And the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides;
and the faces of them, and they have wings — all four, their wings touched one another in the time of his march, they did not turn, and went every direction to get.
Likeness of their faces — a person's face and the face of a lion on the right side of all the four, and on the left side — a calf in the face of all four, and the face of an eagle in all four.
Their faces and their wings were separated from the top, but the two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies.
And they went, every one that is in the face of it, wherever the spirit would go, they were in the time they turned not.
And of the living creatures was like burning coals, as a form of candles, the fire went between bright, and the fire and lightning came out of the fire.
And the living creatures ran and returned as the flash of lightning.
And I looked at the animals — and here on earth beside the living creatures one wheel of the four of them.
Appearance of the wheels and their work — as a type of topaz, and the similarity of all four — one, and by type of construction being felt like a wheel within a wheel.
When they went, they went upon their four sides: and they turned not.
As for their rings — were tall and awesome they are the rims of all four were full of eyes around.
And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them, and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels rose.
Wherever the spirit would go, they went, wherever the spirit went, and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
When we went, these went, and when those stood, these stood, and when those were lifted up from the earth, rose along with them and the wheels for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
Over the heads was the likeness of animals set, shining like crystal, spread out above their heads.
And under the firmament were their wings straight, the one to the other, and each had two wings that covered them, and each has two wings covered their bodies.
And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, like the voice of the Almighty, a noise like the noise of an host: when they stood, — let down their wings.
Was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads, when they stood, they let down their wings.
And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above it.
And I saw as the color of amber, as the appearance of fire within it round about the type of his loins even upward, and from the form of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and a brightness was about it.
As the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds, in the rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about.
And I saw, and behold, in the firmament that was over the heads of the cherubim, as were a sapphire stone, as if something like a throne there appeared over them.
And he spake the man clothed with linen, and said, Go in between the wheels under the cherubim, and take handfuls of burning coals between the cherubim, and scatter them over the city, and he came into my eyes.
Cherubim stood on the right side of the house, when the man went in, and a cloud filled the inner court.
And the glory of the LORD went up from the cherub to the threshold of the house, and the house was filled with a cloud, and the court was full of shining glory of the Lord.
And the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard even to the outer court, as the voice of the Almighty God when He speaks.
And when he had commanded the man clothed with linen, saying, "Take fire from between the wheels, from between the cherubim," and when he came out and stood at the wheel — then from among the cherubim one cherub stretched forth his pyky to the fire, which is between the cherubim, and took and gave handfuls clothed with linen. He took it, and went out.
And there appeared in the cherubims the form of human hands under their wings.
And when I looked, behold the four wheels by the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub, and the wheels on the mind — of a beryl stone.
And mind all four had one likeness, as if a wheel within a wheel.
When they went, they went upon their four sides: and they turned not, but to the place whither the head, and they went there in the time they turned not.
And their whole body, and their backs, and their hands and their wings, and the wheels were full of eyes all around — all four wheels it.
To the wheel symbol, as I heard, it was said: Gilgal (vortex).
And each of the four faces: the first face — the face cherub, and the second person — the person of men, the third person — the lion, and the fourth — the person eagle.
Cherubim lifted. These were the same animals that I saw by the river Chebar.
And when the cherubim went by them and the wheels and when the cherubims lifted up their wings to mount up from the earth, the wheels turned not from beside them.
When they stood, these stood, and when those were lifted up, lifted up themselves, because they had the spirit of the animals.
And the glory of the Lord departed from the threshold of the house, and stood over the cherubim.
And the cherubim lifted up their wings and mounted up in my eyes from the ground when they went out, the wheels beside them, and they stood at the entrance to the east gate of the house of the Lord, and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above.
These were the same animals that I saw under the God of Israel by the river Chebar. And I learned that it is — the cherubim.
Everyone — one had four faces, and each — four wings, and under their wings likeness of the hands of men.
And the likeness of their faces — the same as what the person I saw by the river Chebar, — and the sight of them, and they themselves. Everyone went straight to the side that was facing him.
To understand this biblical story, let's compare Fig. 18 and 19. FIG. 18 shows a schematic drawing of a well known solar halo sundog and ghosting — a phenomenon caused by ice crystals in the sky. FIG. 19 is a diagram of an imaginary, as related in the Bible.
The similarity of the described phenomena with the solar halo immediately catches the eye. Indeed, various types of false suns determined by the type and size of the ice crystals, their density and location in space, the relative immobility of different layers of air containing these crystals, and, finally, the height of the sun above the horizon. By its nature, this phenomenon can take many forms, from simple single colorless halo or sun dog to a complex pattern, known as the "Petersburg phenomenon" because the astronomer Lovitz first saw him in St. Petersburg (now Leningrad) and described it in 1794 .
We will focus on its more simple form, the modification reduced the so-called "Roman phenomenon", which is mentioned in one of the first reports of false suns and halos around them, in 1630 in Rome and watched him carefully described Jesuit priest P. Shiner.
Two separate visions, according to the book of the prophet Ezekiel, refer to two different phenomena. This determines the differences that can be seen in the description of what was happening in the sky.
Not hard to imagine one of the main features of this phenomenon: "the wheel that is in the wheel."
"The four living creatures," obviously, and were false suns, whose "appearance was like burning coals, as a kind of candles." This directive also fits the description of the false suns. Many of them as they are made up of a myriad of shimmering sparks. This is the "face."
From the description it is clear that the figure of the cross was the center of the Sun. Crosses seemed spokes and each spoke formed torso figures, and the sun was very false head. All description makes us assume that this phenomenon occurred shortly after sunrise, and, perhaps, these columns were painted pink light of dawn. They looked as if they were covered with feathers, and no need to strain your imagination too, so that they appeared to you "wings" that cover the torso of the figure. The feet of each figure, based on the Sun, appear wider because of its brightness, and this created the impression that "their feet — legs straight, and the soles of their feet — both of feet of a calf, and glittered" like burnished brass. "The Sun, perhaps even less bright than the sun false, created copper-red glow.
Biblical text describes a strong wind blowing from the north, of course, it was a storm that filled the sky with ice crystals and snowflakes, which caused this phenomenon.
Two halos are some signs of a rainbow with a red stripe on the inside. Other colors mixed and give the impression the amber glow. External rainbow arcs resemble curved outstretched wings, which come into contact to form a full circle, as it is when children are playing "cat and mouse". Meanwhile, the warm glow of the red rainbow stripes seem stretched by human hands, too, joined in a circle. Then we read that on the outer ring (on rims) were the "eyes", we can assume that this means the appearance of secondary false suns, which are very rare.
In comments to the first chapter, verse twenty-four states that the concept of "voice" and "noise" refers to the Hebrew the same word. Indeed, the roar could be caused by the storm itself. The Bible is often the thunder "voice of the Almighty." During the ice storm of thunder does not happen, but we do not believe that this phenomenon occurred in the winter. If the cold region is very high, similar phenomena can be observed throughout the year.
The "vision" is described by "the throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone," that is a sky-blue color. This throne was obviously curved arch over the outer wheel, which corresponds exactly to the description of its color and out of all the arcs and loops that occur when a false suns, only this upper arch is largely colored in blue.
Wheel does not rotate, and "rose." And with them the animals were raised. In other words, as the sun was rising, and with it higher and higher rose the huge wheels and all the details of the picture.
The only strange places throughout the specification are face. Comments indicate that in the original, after the word "lion" comma missing. Obviously, four persons — is the fruit of the imagination: a human face in front face of a lion on the right, the person on the left calf of an eagle and the face is not visible, as it turned back. I will not try to interpret something that image and would only say that many experts have pointed out that the throne on wheels is very similar to the cart, and perhaps the very "chariot of fire", where the prophet Elijah was taken up "with stormy wind to heaven. "
The Bible describes the other visions, which were in fact false suns. Some of them appear in the sixth chapter of the book of the prophet Isaiah, seraphim, six wings instead of four (which is likely, since the cross, which goes beyond the round halo, can look like the top of the wing), and the "burning coals."
In the seventh chapter of the book of Daniel speaks of four beasts that came out of the sea, who rose up from the earth, and have taken the feet as a man. In the vision, also referred to the throne and the wheels of fire. Since the phenomenon is happening pochyu, we can assume that we are not talking about false suns, moons and the false.
In addition, here we find mention of the "horns", which are very characteristic of many phenomena, especially when they are seen quite clearly.
Most comments related to the wheels, which "within a wheel", to the assumption that the rims were planted at right angles to, say, the Earth's equator and the meridian passing through both poles. The consequence of this confusion was a very symptomatic fact: although the wheels of Ezekiel described very vividly and clearly, among many Bibles, illustrated by the most famous artists, including Dora, I do not find any, which would draw these wheels. Rafael also wrote the vision of Ezekiel, and his picture has no wheels, no chariots.
Without the help of Meteorology artist, of course, could not understand all these wheels. But with all the details of the description of meteorology are immediately in place, and no matter what any religious meaning ascribed to this vision, its nature is clear to us now. And he is a first-rate scientist Ezekiel observer, artfully describes the most important atmospheric phenomena.
