Society
The human rights situation in Belarus has not improved, so there can be progress in the relations between Belarus and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

This was reported Rapporteur on Belarus Sinikka Hurskainen, making a report to the PACE political committee, which held a hearing on Belarus.

The hearing was closed to the press. Officials of Belarus to participate in the meeting were not invited.

Following the meeting, the press service released a report of Mrs. Hurskainen.

PACE rapporteur has once again expressed concern about the politically motivated criminal cases, with information about the torture of prisoners, the procedural irregularities in the investigation and litigation, as well as due to the imposition of new death sentences in Belarus. According to Hurskainen, For these reasons, the PACE contacts with the Belarusian authorities on a high level should remain frozen.

At the same time, PACE should continue the dialogue with the democratic forces of Belarus, civil society, the opposition, independent media and human rights organizations, said Ms Hurskainen.
