If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast: for it is a human

Satanic symbol 666 comes from the Bible. In the revelation of John Ch. 13, art. 18 we read: "Here is wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man and his number is six hundred sixty-six. "

Commentators do not have a common understanding and to who is meant in this puzzle. But almost all agree that the so-called "gematria" may be the mechanism by which we can try to solve this riddle.

Gematria is an ancient method by which relate to numbers and letters significance for the understanding of the hidden meaning of the word. Gematria is based on the fact that both classical Greek and Hebrew had no special numerical designations, but instead used the value of the letters in the sign.

Following this principle, the first letter of the alphabet corresponds to a value of "one", the second letter — with a value of "two" and so on. In this regard, each word in both languages may be read as a group of digits. If we then calculate the sum, we get a number that is matched to the word. In the case of the names we get the so-called "number of a man."

These numbers are used in cases where the direct nomination (naming) is not convenient or danger.

Found in the city of Pompeii is a sign that a compelling example. This inscription reads (in Greek): "I love the one whose number is 545." In this way, sweetheart could see that the inscription that was written for her, but for others it remained hidden, in particular that which of the many Greek women had specifically in mind.

It is assumed that, for a human figure in the biblical book of Revelation 13.18 should do likewise. The author probably did not want the name to be revealed to other people, so he hid it. At the same time, the Christian brothers name that stood behind the figures revealed easily.

But in the second century, St. Irenaeus confessed that he does not know what the man meant by that number. He suggested three solutions, none of which, in the light of current research, is not entirely satisfactory. In the course of history offers numerous more or less satisfactory solutions.

Historians to the rescue

Among others mentioned Pope, John Knox, Martin Luther, and Napoleon, which assigns the number of the beast 666. During the Second World War gave birth to the idea of someone that if we are starting with the letter "a" and mistaking it for "100" read a numeric value, that is, in this case, "6" will correspond to the number "101" and so on , the total amount of the name Hitler, too, will be 666. But of all these solutions is the most likely one: if we write the name Nero Caesar (a Greek form of the name him) in Hebrew letters, the numerical value of the word will be 666.

Moreover, this assumption is well supported by the fact that one of the most respected biblical manuscripts under the code "C" (this is Ephraim, fifth century) gives the number 666 instead of 616 because this number corresponds to the Latin form of the name of Nero. In this case, both versions match the numerical value of his name, and so is the beast in the text to refer to one of the most violent persecutors of the Church. In this case, however, is not so important to decide which clues of the puzzle is correct.

The very gematria later was developed in numerous targeted at the numbers and the number of types of magic. Even the ancient Greek temples were built in accordance with some gematric relations. Later reused diverse, but built on the principles of gematric ideas. For example, not only the words were calculated with the same amount and were used for philosophical conclusions, but also the message of the Spirit were reduced to the comparison with the numerical values of their names and rechecked by keyword their messages.

The paranoia around the code

In recent years, some fundamentalist and charismatic groups are trying to ascertain the approach of threatening the rule of the Antichrist by the fact that all products are now supplied with a bar code. They are in the bar code number 666 and find its cause and the relationship with the cited passage of Revelation of John. Each group of lines in the code is in place any numbers. Two thin lines correspond to the number 6. As if by chance all the code shared by three double lines, which are very reminiscent of two thin lines corresponding to the top six.

Thus, all the code is divided into three sections. From that such religious groups concluded that the three double lines in labeling scanner, in fact, are the number of the beast, and the use of a bar code is not random, and embodies the realization of what is said in the passage from Revelation, saying that no one can buy or sell unless he has the number of the beast.

Of course, one would immediately reject this claim as religious fanaticism. But let's try to see if there is at serious grounds for such an interpretation?

To do this we would have to go back to the way the Greeks and the Jews wrote numbers and figures. The Greeks and the Jews used the decimal system, but they used it differently than we have, because neither one nor the other did not have the value "zero". Although it has been decimal system, it lacked the position now occupied by zero. Therefore, to operate the decimal system, they needed more signs than us today, in a system where there are nine characters for numbers plus zero.

For numbers up to now 999 they took twenty seven different characters, namely, the nine characters for the simple numbers from 1 to 9, nine for the tens of thousands — from 10 to 100, and nine more — for the hundreds — from 100 to 900. Because they did not have the ground, they could not like us to write the same characters tens and hundreds, and increase their value by adding zero and thus change the character position within the number.

This means that they could not use the same symbols, for example, to refer to three, three hundred and thirty. Based on this, when you write the number 666 is not a three-fold repetition of six, but they had to use with different letters, the first of which stood for six hundred sixty-second, and the third — six.

On this basis, we conclude that any speculation based on a threefold repetition of six, is correlated with a modern, today's writing and has nothing to do with the actual biblical number.
