Popular representations of aliens are worthless

In popular films aliens are doing evil in the world by the general nastiness (above) or a strange predilection for human flesh (bottom). In any case, we are talking about the population of our subconscious, and not the surrounding universe. (Illustration of 20th Century Fox / Paramount.)

Jill Tarter, who recently left as head of the Center for Project SETI, set about promoting the cause of his life among the masses, including those hoping to find additional funding. And then he was faced with a certain handicap popular perception of the problem.

Our understanding of intelligent life, and technically advanced civilization can be ridiculously limited. "All of these" Men in Black 3 "," Prometheus ", and so on — entertainment and metaphors of our own fears, which have no relation to what will actually be the first contact with aliens" — scientists believe. According to Ms. Tarter, the authors of Hollywood melodramas too are behind both the benevolent aliens, and with seeking to destroy the Earth monsters.

The researcher believes that the Hollywood aliens, and their perception in popular culture — is calling a spade a spade, a catastrophic failure of the imagination. It's just a projection of how we subconsciously imagine aliens from other planets. Advanced civilizations beyond the solar system will be interested in us, at best, to the same extent that the biologist sympathizes culture growing in a petri dish. To think otherwise — horrific, inefficient narcissism.

In this sense, Jill Tarter calls unsuccessful previous attempts to Carl Sagan, one of the founders of the actual SETI, spread among the masses more adequate conception, through, inter alia, of the novel "Contact", which in 1997 was made the same film. It's hard to even mechanisms for aliens to become lightning-like people, and their motivation. It is clear that Sagan wanted to reassure the masses, to make them forget all the horrors of the "War of the Worlds" and similar references. But why is purely hypothetical extraterrestrial intelligence in general should be friendly toward people, up to the organization to have a free trip to the center of the galaxy?

But representations of UFO aliens constant interference in earthly affairs — and at theater of the absurd. It is simply the transfer of ideas about Otherworldly demons and angels in the XXI century: the long and secretive pulling for unseen (and nonexistent) strings do not need control mankind civilization, is so energetically powerful that it can afford to interstellar travel. Such activities conspirological aliens — just a manifestation of the human gestalt in our own psyche.

According to Ms. Tarter, very cautiously assess the prospects of contact, we still have no direct evidence of the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence, and if we ever get from him, and signal, it is doubtful that we have been able to learn from him how to look like aliens or how they see the world. And this, of course, only if the signal is based on the represented to us kinds of radiation and we are able to decrypt it.

The first text of contact with aliens, "Taketori Monogatari", refers to the X century. (Figure stranger returns to her). The story, of course, naive, but in the background of Hollywood seems to be quite bearable. (Exhibit Tosa Horomichi, Tosa Hirosumi.)

By the way, the scientist is not clear motives hypothetical aliens on their spending significant part of its GNP to travel to Earth. Based on astronomical data, we do not have an excess of heavy elements in comparison to any of the detected Earth-like planets. No "Avatar" in relation to the Earth, in its view, in real life can not decisively. It does not seem plausible hypothesis of pathological love killing or simply evil alien civilizations, including in the form of Stephen Hawking. First, it is difficult to imagine their development without self-destruction. Second, any hypothetical "death stars" just is not: they are not visible in telescopes, their work is invisible to the naked eye.

In the end, says the former head of the Centre for Research Project SETI, given the more than 10-billion-dollar age known stars with high metallicity (and hence the planets), almost all attempts to directly imagine communication on equal terms with an alien civilization is only possible in version 10 year old child, tapping on the wall of the nest in Morse code: "Hey, ants, how are you?"

The problem is that the ants — that is, we — may simply not know Morse code.
