Space at a Glance: Russians beat records

Mankind has escaped beyond the Earth only half a century ago. The first space flight lasted only 108 minutes, during which Yuri Gagarin on the ship "Vostok", launched from Baikonur on 12 April 1961, completed one orbit around the planet and landed safely in the Saratov region. Over the next few decades, we have made some progress in space exploration. Consider the space records in numbers.

Start of the first in the history of manned spacecraft "Vostok".

The longest flight ever made a Russian cosmonaut Valery Polyakov in 1995. The duration of his amounted to 437 days 17 hours 58 minutes. That is, Polyakov spent in space is about 7000 times longer than Yuri Gagarin.

Record in orbit for several flights had twice beaten Sergei Avdeev (three flight 747 days 14 hours 12 minutes) and Sergei Krikalev (by 2005, he spent 803 days in orbit 9:00 39 minutes 09 seconds.). How do you think what it is, many months of feeding tubes and use the space toilet?

March 18, 1965 the Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov made the first spacewalk. Total output time was 23 minutes 41 seconds, including 12 minutes 9 seconds — directly outside the vehicle. I just remember my favorite fantasy film — "2001 A Space Odyssey" by Stanley Kubrick. Due to interfere with on-board computer protagonist almost did not stay in the open space.

Ironically, it was in 2001, March 11, the American Susan Helms and James Voss her partner stayed in space longer than any — 8 hours 56 minutes.

But the number of spacewalks U.S. still ahead of us! Anatoly Solovyov's do it 16 times, and stayed there for more than 78 hours in total.

All in all, humans are more than 240 times a spacewalk. In the year two thousand in orbit is constantly workingThe International Space Station. Back in 2010 broke the record for the ISS worked for about 10 years, "Mir" station for the duration of the continuous stay of the person on board. It is on the ISS today and put most of the space records.

Last year, the Federal Space Agency and NASAapproveddecision on the joint experiment. Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko and American Scott Kelly will travel to the ISS in 2015 and will spend a year there bezvylazno. The results of the experiment will help in the preparation of future missions to Mars.

Russia's role in space exploration is difficult to overestimate, we still remain a major space power, but it turned out that one of the main symbols of the space age — Baikonur — after the collapse of the Soviet Union no longer belongs to us, it is the territory of Kazakhstan. And it was from Baikonur we launched the first satellite, and from there flew in space, Yuri Gagarin. And today, most of our launches (ie, the lion's share of the world in general) is done with this site.

But in order to freely use these gates, we now have to pay the rent —$ 115 millionper year, plus 50 more — on the city's infrastructure. Not the most impossibly, in general, the amount that's only Kazakhs sometimes show donors. Then agree on only part of the planned launch, if not frightening fact that Russia expelled from the spaceport. We have to connectheavy artillerydiplomacy. In late March, met the ad hoc intergovernmental commission on Baikonur. Russia was represented by First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov. Here it is, in the center:

And Shuvalovagreed: We stay at Baikonur, and within a year our country will develop a new agreement on the sharing of the cosmodrome. In addition, Shuvalov agreed schedule launches for the year. Sadly, of course, that the launch site of historical significance for the entire world space, is now the territory of another country, but in the end, it's not so important: the stories of the achievements of our compatriots have not vycherknesh. First place in the book of records of space is ours. A landing Americans on the moon still Stanley Kubrick shot!
