The decision of the Information Ministry to initiate the elimination of "Nasha Niva" and "Narodnaya Volya" we were asked to comment on the chief editor of "Nasha Niva" Andrei Skurko, chief editor of "HB" Joseph Seredich and deputy head of the Belarusian Association of Journalists Andrei Bastunets. With them talking Yuri Drakakhrust.
Andrey Skurko, chief editor of the newspaper "Nasha Niva"
Skurko: Ministry of information refers to the three warnings, the ones we got for lighting strip "The Godfather." We challenged them in the SEC and on appeal the SEC, but we were denied. The third warning we did not have time to appeal, and I wonder why such a hurry, because the third warning we got yesterday — for the coverage of the tragic events of April 11 in the subway.
It all depends on the goodwill of the Ministry of Information. There were situations when the newspapers and had two or three warnings over the years, but they do not cover.
Drakakhrust: And do you have this step the Ministry of the political background?
Skurko: We December very high political tension in the country: first, those political affairs on the results of the post-election protests. Then there were the first signs. Were searched in the "NN" technique seized in the case of a "riot." The economic problems that arose in 2011, greatly attracted the attention of people to the independent press. People began to look for objective information out there, not propaganda. And it was also noted. The tragic events of April 11 were also covered by independent media more quickly and more completely than the state media, which also caused a nervous reaction.
It was stated that the country should praduhilyatstsa any panic, even currency. Well, under this "panic" approach timely and objective information. I see this as a political component, so that the Ministry of Information hastily initiate the case.
Seredich Joseph, chief editor of the "People's Will"
Seredich: We do not have any warning last year. It's not a warning, and smyahotstse. If the Ministry of Information warns us that we were told that our readers subscribe to a more profitable, "HB" through Souzpechat, not through Belpochta — so why not?
They gave us a warning that any benefits Souzpechat "HB" did not give. So this fool could see, just by Souzpechat subscription to the newspaper cheaper. And for this it is necessary to give a warning?
It's a rip-off, this daylight robbery.
Drakakhrust: What steps do you intend to do if the newspaper will be banned?
Seredich: Why do you talk immediately to ban? And I believe that it will never happen. Now we are sending a telegram to Lukashenko and letter to Mr. Yakubovich, which today still chairs the Public Coordination Council for the media to this issue has been addressed.
Trying to close the "HB" — it seems too early you hide "People's Will".
Drakakhrust: I do not hide, I just asked if you have a "Plan B" in the worst case?
Seredich: If necessary, it is developed for 30 minutes
Deputy head of the Belarusian Association of Journalists, lawyer Andrei Bastunets
Bastunets: The move underscores the intense and unhealthy atmosphere, which now is in the Belarusian society. During and economic and political crisis the authorities want to close the mouth independent media.
In the history of independent Belarus through the courts were closed three media — newspaper "Freedom," "Consent" and "Pursuit." Now for a few months under threat of closure three media — "Autoradio" and "Nasha Niva" and "Narodnaya Volya".
DrakakhrustQ: Can I somehow legally oppose the lawsuit ministry or the whole force at his side — if the media for a year or two more warnings, it can be fixed?
Bastunets: Unfortunately the court formally and fit. But you have to fight and use all of the features even if they are small.
Drakakhrust: The Return of "Nasha Niva" and "HB" in legal circulation in autumn 2008, it was part of the dialogue between Minsk and the European Union. What are the political consequences will be closing these newspapers?
Bastunets: We're being told that the steps taken during the "dialogue" were neither systemic nor irreversible. The move — call another cross on the possibilities of something to mend relations with Europe, in today's economic situation looks strange.
