The great mystic is not dead!

All that can be said about Carlos Castaneda

Carlos Castaneda can be easily counted among the greatest mysteries of the twentieth century. Reliably known about him only that he — the author of ten best-selling books and founder of Cleargreen, which now owns the rights to the musical legacy of Castaneda. All the rest — no more than speculation, to say the speculation. Castaneda carefully kept "secret identity," almost did not give interviews, and flatly refused to be photographed. He even denied that he had ever been married. Carlos Cesar Arana Castaneda (presumably, this is his full name) was born on December 25, 1925 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 1951, he emigrated to the United States, and in 1960, Castaneda, then a student of the University of California, met don Juan Matus, a Yaqui Indian from that Castaneda became a spiritual teacher and for twelve years passed ward intimate knowledge of his tribe. Castaneda's books are a record of their conversations, and a chain of events in which terminates in 1973, when Don Juan mysteriously disappeared. Legend has it that he and Castaneda left this world in a similar way — as it disappeared into thin air. Less poetic version of the obituary states that he died 27 aprelya1 998 from liver cancer, after cremation ashes Castaneda, according to his will, was sent to Mexico.
The meeting with the dead
It so happened that among all the failures and troubles, was waiting for me in Mexico, I was incredibly lucky. I went to the country for the umpteenth time, just in the other cases, it is not had nothing to do with literature. There, in the city of Saltillo (the capital of the Mexican state of Coahuila), met up with my business partner Dr Blanco Anglin. She said that from day to day, waiting for arrival of Carlos Castaneda, her close friend.
I knew about all the doubts and rumors that circulated in the reading and especially in the environment okololiteraturnoy Castaneda's death in 1998. According to the version published in the press, he died of cancer at the age of 72. But the instrument of Castaneda's death and did not appear. (It has been reported only that his ashes were scattered over the desert.) This gave the writer Viktor Pelevin right to doubt the correctness of reports of the death of Carlos. He has published a rather peculiar obituary. That's what he's there, in particular, wrote: "Few writers evoked such enthusiasm and such irritation. This enthusiasm is understandable — many of us remember what it was like to read samizdat copy of Castaneda in Moscow, hung with portraits of the black magicians of the Political Bureau, or to purchase bulk quantities of decorative cactus Lophophora Williamsi from crazed cactus with Bird Market — under the suspicious and confused gaze patrol policeman. It is clear and irritation — the world is full of notorious failures that are suitable to his books and his yardstick. This yardstick are they, therefore, about Castaneda will always argue. But I doubt anyone would argue about these debaters. Castaneda's greatest poet and mystic of the twentieth century. Millions of people owe him moments of insight and happiness, and even if it turned out that these insights do not lead anywhere, but this is not his fault. "
Carlos arrived in Saltillo. We quickly became friends. The only thing he asked me: do not talk unnecessarily, who stands behind his pen name. The reasons for this he had, as far as I know a few, and the first of them — Carlos did business. And who of superstitious people will be pleased to know that his partner shaman.
As Carlos Castaneda became
Carlos Castaneda was born in Mexico City, in a family of traditional Catholics. From a young age renounced Catholicism, became an active atheist, participated in the youth movement of the left in Mexico.
Over the years, recognized the existence of God and, as you know, has created a model of understanding life. Writes a lot, travels: visits Japan, China goes on foot, lingers in Tibet …
Castaneda alias appears on the books of the series travels to Ixtlan, in which the experiences gained during the campaigns of the Mexican shaman Don Juan Matus and adventure in northern Sonora.
About his observations Castaneda writes more as a student-ethnographer than as a writer and philosopher. But the books immediately aroused great public interest.
It is noteworthy that they were originally published in the United States, in English, as Carlos believed that in this country it is easier to perceive the unusual mystical experiences than in Catholic Mexico.
That was another reason, perhaps, the most important one. Its first editor was his wife Rebecca Liska, whose first language was English. She made him famous. It was his first editor and translator into English.
Now the popularity of Castaneda's extraordinary. It is necessary to look to the internet as you will see ads about seminars, gatherings of fans and connoisseurs of his work and philosophy. All over the world, and especially in the United States clubs are named after him.
When returning to Moscow, I was telling my colleagues journalists and writers that he met and became friends with Carlos Castaneda, the first question was: Is he alive? Then he said, yes it's probably a hundred years! No, not one. Although it is difficult to believe that a man who in his 60s of the first publications shook the soul of millions of people, there were only about 20 years.
After the death from cancer in 1972 LISKI Rebecca Castaneda has not published any books. I asked Carlos why he did not write all these years? I wrote — said Carlos. Just do not publish.
What would all this mean?
The book El Solitario, «Cabin Fever" and "Lonely", dedicated to Juan Diego, the Holy Shaman, who lived in the world five years ago, during the Spanish conquest of the Americas. He contributed greatly to the establishment of Christianity in Mexico (New Spain), and, in fact, a renaissance of Catholic Christianity in the world. Around the Juan Diego — Holy Shaman was a lot of controversy. The church, at the direction of which he was secretly murdered, did not recognize his merits.
The book begins with the author's conversation with Jean-Paul Sartre (not an obstacle to the mystic death in the world), with Isaac Asimov, with Octavio Paz. In conversations involved and don Juan Matus. Author of the book takes on a role of the registrar, the chronicler of events.
With the advent of the book and the work of the Russian edition of its related, I would say some funny things and coincidences that occur unusual circumstances. The lack of excess funds, Carlos — a fairly common condition. After all, even when it comes to any significant amount, he tries to get rid of it as soon as possible. So when he called me from Mexico (it is not a cheap thing, because Carlos does not speak briefly), I am wary. And he began to move the story.
The day before he, as usual, accompanied by their dogs — wolf-like shepherd Dunga and Antara — went into the mountains. They climbed to the highest peak of the mountains. Carlos made a fire, but once settled in a hut, fell from the sky a large meteorite cut down thousands of trees and mountain forest. He realized that he had made a sign, and waited.
And in Moscow the rain
Around midnight, the fire came near him, his teacher Don Juan Matus, and then in the bright light appeared Juan Diego. They struck up a conversation, and from that moment Carlos had not slept for almost two weeks, but only recorded the conversation and the events taking place around. This is how the manuscript of "The Hermit".
After some time, Carlos called me again. "How are you?" — I asked. "We have heavy rains," — he said. "And here in Moscow and suffocating smoke, burning swamp." — "Wetlands can not burn," — he said. "But if there is no rain, can" — I said. "Well, then, said Carlos, we will send you some of our rain." This phrase sounded like a joke. However, on the morning in Moscow began to rain.
In the match I do not believe it. But here's another one. In essence, the "Cabin Fever" was completed in 2001. One of the main characters of the book, Don Juan Matus, said in a conversation with Carlos, "Only when the Pope recognizes Juan Diego Holy Spirit, he will be allowed to die …" Insiders know that a person can not die by his own decision. To this he needs permission from above. And in August 2002, during a visit to Mexico, Pope Juan Paul II announced the decision of the Catholic Church include the Juan Diego, St. shaman — a saint.
PS You might ask: Is this the Carlos Castaneda, who wrote Journey to Ixtlan, or is it a new author who uses the pseudonym. I asked Carlos: how do we prove it was you Castaneda? And he always answered in only one way — publications, talent and serve the reader of the book after book.
Who is Juan Diego
December 20, 2001 by the world's news feeds passed the message that the head of the Roman Catholic Church canonized the Mexican Indian Juan Diego. According to legend, in 1531 near the town he met the Mother of God. She asked Juan to go to the Spaniards, and to persuade them to build the first Catholic cathedral in Mexico City. To believe it is simply the Indian colonizers, Our Lady gave him the indisputable evidence of the meeting. She turned in his cloak, which was imprinted on her face. Shaken by the conquistadors began construction of the temple. Later, residents of Mexico City have hereunto statue Diego. One of the proofs of his holiness is the resurrection of the dead boy. Every year thousands of pilgrims come to the statue, which was on his knees, asking them to send down the holy blessing.
Alive or dead, Castaneda makes to reckon with
In late February, the publisher "AST-PRESS" will be released in a new book by Carlos Castaneda's "Cabin Fever". Her appearance is in itself quite an unexpected event, because many believed that Castaneda died in 1998. Carlos Castaneda's first book translated into Russian with the author's original language — Spanish, not English, as it was before.
On the way to the publication of the book met with many obstacles: doubts about the authenticity of the manuscript, endless checking copyright and authority representatives, the requests to the Ministry of Culture of Mexico. Fortunately, all was resolved safely — a final decision on the publication of the book in Russia.
And then it began. The first revolt Phones: frustrated calls in the tubes was buzzing and uhalo. After the Christmas holidays at the disposal of the publishing house were pictures of Carlos Castaneda. They decided to scan, but the first of them, symbolically depicting Russia, scanner broke down and burned forever. After a few days of excerpts from the new book were laid out in the computer network of publishers. Soon after, the wiring shorted out and damaged almost all computers.
Perhaps it is simply a series of coincidences. However, the publishers are in a situation very seriously, jokes about magic is not released, and Carlos Castaneda called respectfully — Don Carlos.
