On Tuesday, April 26 — the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. What distinguishes the current celebration of this date, the government and the opposition? This is what we now talk with our columnist Vitaly Tsygankova.
SV: Vitali, Alexander Lukashenko, as always, on the anniversary of the tragedy went to the Chernobyl affected areas? What should symbolize this step?
Tsigankov: On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, it seems, and the government and the opposition are the standard and the traditional scheme. Alexander Lukashenko, as always, in recent years, provides a working trip to the regions affected by the Chernobyl accident. This trip is to show that the president cares about the residents of Chernobyl areas that public interests are at it in the first place. Each year, the propaganda and the very Lukashenko repeat such a contrast — until, say, some rally in the square, Alexander Lukashenko has been the real problems of real people.
In this silent, that every year the financing of Chernobyl programs is reduced, which is grown in the contaminated areas of agricultural products. By the way, this all seems to be little practical sense, as in Belarus enough free unplowed ground and in Vitebsk and Grodno regions. But in this sense, seems to be primarily a propaganda — to show that in these contaminated areas can be sown that radiation is not terrible. And, if we talk more strategically, to show that the Chernobyl problem no longer exists.
SV: Vitaly, at the beginning of our conversation you said that both the power and the opposition are the standard and traditional chrnobylskay scheme. How can evaluate the training of opposition to the Chernobyl anniversary?
Tsigankov: To be fair the specifics of the current situation. The Chernobyl anniversary is celebrated on the background of other important events that have covered it — it's post-election crackdown, Trials protesters on December 19, and of course, the explosion in the Minsk metro on April 11. Of course, that is against this background preparation for the anniversary of the Chernobyl could not become the main theme of the whole society. The opposition has tried to somehow diversify celebration Chernobyl date. For example, April 23 Brest activists of the campaign "Tell the Truth" held
action devoted to the 25th anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In the market they distributed leaflets about the real consequences of the Chernobyl accident. In addition, handing out leaflets about the dangers of radioactive contaminated food, guidance on diet and cooking, to reduce the internal dose.
But in general, the main action of the opposition, of course, was planned "Chernobyl Way", and here I must say, the current situation has had a significant impact on the shape of the meeting. Let me remind you, the authorities banned the march, and perhaps the first time in many years it was the way just will not, and will just be a rally in Bangalore Square. It can be said that the opposition has decided not to venture into such a political situation of running into a new repression. On the other hand, it must be said that every year the Chernobyl Way is losing its role as the main opposition campaign, to the extent that it reduces the significance of the Chernobyl theme for the majority of the citizens of Belarus.
