4.6 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Sicily

A strong earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred on the night of Wednesday in the Strait of Messina between Sicily and the southern Italian region of Calabria, local media reported.

According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy, an earthquake with the epicenter at a depth of about 45 kilometers, was recorded in 01.12 local time (12.03 MSK).

Fluctuations in the Earth's crust were felt in Sicily, and in the province of Reggio Calabria, which caused panic among local residents, many of whom immediately began to write about what happened in social networks.

Specialists note that in Italy there has been a high seismic activity. Only for the first two weeks of August in the Apennines were reported 549 aftershocks.

Each new earthquake causing increased concern among the Italian population. This is not least due to the fact that 20 and 29, in the north of the country there have been two strong earthquakes, the magnitude of which was respectively 6.0 and 5.8. Then, 27 people died, 400 people received injuries of varying severity, more than 16 thousand became homeless.
