5.6 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Taiwan

An earthquake with magnitude 5.6 occurred near the island of Taiwan, information on injuries were reported, according to Xinhua news agency.

Tremor was recorded at 9:08 am local time (05:08 MSK) at the south-eastern coast of the island. The epicenter was located at a depth of 20 kilometers. Information about the threat of a tsunami there.

Taiwan is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire — areas with high seismic activity and earthquakes are occurring regularly. Most of them do not lead to serious loss of life and destruction.

In 1999, on the island there were powerful earthquakes, the magnitude of which was 7.6. Then killed more than 2.6 thousand people.
