Earthquake of magnitude 7.9 occurred in Costa Rica

An earthquake measuring 7.9 magnitude occurred in Costa Rica, reports RIA "Novosti" with reference to the U.S. Geological Survey. Earthquakes have been recorded at 08:42 local time (18:42 GMT).

The earthquake lies at a depth of 20 kilometers. Quake epicenter was located 80 kilometers from the city of Liberia.

Reuters reports with reference to the Pacific Warning Center the tsunami threat the United States, after the earthquake announced the threat of a tsunami.

Information on possible damages on yet been received, but in some areas of the capital of the Central American country of San Jose, was disrupted power supplies.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not exclude that the quake may form a tsunami. "Earthquakes of this magnitude can cause a destructive tsunami that could fall on the coastline of the Caribbean", — said the center, which cites "Interfax".

According to the center, in addition to Costa Rica, the tsunami may threaten Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala and Peru.
