Seismic areas cover 50% of the territory of Italy — geologists

Seismic areas cover about 50% in Italy, while in a high-risk population of about 3 million people, according to a report by the National Council of geologists, published on Sunday.

"About 3 million people live in the high risk area (in 725 cities), 21 million live in the area of medium risk (population 2 thousand 344 settlements)," — the document says, as quoted by Adnkronos.

According to geologists, in Italy in just one year is about 2 thousand earthquakes. The most dangerous parts of the country in terms of seismic activity are Sicily, southern region of Calabria and Campania, and the central region of Tuscany.

"Our country is seismically vulnerable, but most of the buildings are still ill-equipped to ensure that withstand an earthquake, or are geologically unfavorable regions", — the report says.

An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 was recorded at 04.04 (04.06 MSK) on Sunday. A few hours before — in 01.15 (03.15 MSK) — was recorded another quake of magnitude 4.1. The epicenter of the earthquake, according to seismologists, located 36 kilometers north of the city of Bologna, at a depth of 5.1 kilometers.

The disaster killed four workers from several local businesses, two more women have died of a heart attack triggered by the experienced fear. More than 50 people were injured.
