Tremor was registered at 17.18 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, 20.18 MSK). The epicenter was located 60 kilometers south of the capital, Managua. Its center lies at a depth of 81.1 kilometers.
Nicaragua is a country with the highest in Central America, seismic activity. Two strong earthquakes in 1931 and 1972 almost completely destroyed Managua. In 1992, an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 in the Pacific Ocean triggered a huge wave that covered the west coast of Nicaragua. As a result, 145 people were killed and dozens of fishing villages have been destroyed.
