Ashton urged Minsk to stop the massacre of opposition

EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Catherine Ashton condemned the sentence to Andrei Sannikov

and called on the Belarusian authorities to release all political prisoners and cease politically motivated trials.

In a special statement, quoted by BelaPAN, Ashton notes that "deeply concerned" about the last days of harsh sentences against representatives of civil society and the political opposition.

"Current events leave no doubt about the significant deterioration of the situation of human rights and democratic principles in Belarus since the presidential elections of 19 December 2010 were violated electoral standards. High Representative of the EU is also deeply concerned about reports of alleged torture and other ill-treatment methods with the opponents of the authorities in Belarus.
She called on the Belarusian authorities to immediately stop the massacre of the political opposition and civil society, to release all political prisoners and cease politically motivated trials, in including in respect of other ex-presidential candidates.

Ashton has once again stated the EU's readiness to consider "further targeted restrictive measures in all areas of cooperation" with the official Minsk.
