Researchers have determined which areas of the brain cause us to take wrong decisions.
Scientists from the California Institute at Berkeley (USA) conducted a study in macaques, to see what areas of the brain weigh all the "pros" and "cons" when we make decisions. To get a particular portion of the juice monkeys had to choose a picture. The animals quickly realized what an icon is associated with the largest number of food. Comparison of different images and the choice among them should be allowed researchers to see which areas of the brain are included directly in the decision making.
In their experiments, described in the journal Nature Neuroscience, scientists have focused on two areas of the brain called the anterior cingulate and share the orbitofrontal cortex.
Previous work said that the damage to these sites lead to difficulties in making decisions. Although people and looked fine at first glance, their lives are soon plunged into chaos due to constant absurd actions that they take. This is quite reminiscent of the psychological dynamics in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder and various addictions.
Scientists have found out that the orbitofrontal cortex regulates neural activity, depending on the importance of a decision. Roughly speaking, this area of the brain prioritizes, and builds a hierarchical pyramid. It affects the choice of the place of work or study, and even the decision to start the morning with tea or coffee, also made with the direct participation of the orbitofrontal cortex. When violations in its functional neural activity will tend not to the right, common choice. For the most part, decision-making in general is difficult.
As far as the anterior cingulate, she remembers the decision that turned out to have the most profitable, and vice versa. After eating something unsavory or even ill after that, the next time we are on such a feast just give up. Again, damage to this area of the brain as it makes us forget that we were bad, or do not do it too significant to adjust something in connection with this behavior.
According to scientists, it is possible that some substances, like the same alcohol can cause direct harm to the said parts of the brain that triggers the further escalation of dependence.
