No such thing as a "hidden alcoholism", in medicine there. But often, non-medical workers, psychologists and ordinary people use this expression in relation to people who are prone to alcoholism, alcohol abuse, and for various reasons, do their best to hide their addiction to alcohol.
Who are the "hidden" alcoholics?
These people tend to use alcohol or not strong in diluted form, such as coffee and brandy. Alcohol intake is low doses and more frequently throughout the day. In my defense, the patient can often hear — "I drink a little bit, to be on our toes all day. Otherwise, I can not work." Most often this type of alcoholism in women and is characterized for "female alcoholism." Women use alcohol, realizing that for them to be obscenely drunk "in public." But alcoholism is a disease that is characterized by an irresistible craving to consume alcohol and sick people they alone can not give up alcohol.
How to recognize this man?
Most often, the behavior of the "secret alcoholic" is disinhibited. In the initial stages it is usually excited, unreasonably cheerful, never gives up small, "random" doses of alcohol, and then trying to "knock down" smell (chocolates, coffee, cigarettes or chewing gum). Later, depending on the individual traits may become withdrawn, aggressive, easily vulnerable, tearful, etc., caused by intoxication and asthenia body, beginning manifestations of systemic diseases, changes in mental status.
If we use the term "hidden alcoholism", it can be described as a permanent form of alcoholism. As a rule, people who can be called "the" covered alcoholics "in the medical sense are at the stage of alcoholism. In most such cases, it is a permanent form of alcoholism, or on the first or the beginning of the second stage of alcoholism.
Where does the "hidden alcoholism"?
Permanent alcohol intoxication, although in small doses at first leads to cognitive (behavioral) and violations of the thinking of the mental activity of the brain. Later start to form chronic physical illness, it changes in the heart muscle, diseases of the liver, pancreas, stomach, urinary system. Against the background of chronic intoxication of the brain and body can be formed such diseases as epilepsy, alcohol, alcoholic psychosis, alcoholic encephalopathy, stomach ulcers, heart attack, liver cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus, pancreatitis, kidney stones, impotence and other diseases. Formed as a result of alcohol use, these diseases, either alone or indirectly, can cause death.
But hidden alcoholism can not remain so forever. There comes a time when disease moves to a higher level and start drinking bouts, with the use of large amounts of alcohol. Such episodes are rare and first day, becoming more frequent and their duration increases. Hide the presence of alcohol addiction is becoming more and more difficult. There comes a time when, as the saying goes, "the secret becomes clear." At this point alcoholism already fully formed and typically having a second already diagnosed with a transition in the third step, alcohol dependence.
How can you help the "hidden" alcoholic?
Help may be one — motivation for anti-alcohol treatment. Unfortunately, the prognosis in such cases is usually poor. As a rule, such a person is difficult to convince a disease, because it is always the main argument — "I do not get drunk and not drunk I roll. Just think, a little drunk. Who is stopping you?". It has no awareness of the severity of their own condition and situation.
If we talk about the practical work with these patients, it requires a special approach and specific therapy. Treatment requires a sufficiently large voltage by more than one doctor, and a team where they should be represented by physicians of different specialties.
In such cases, therapy yields positive results only if carried out specific comprehensive treatment, and relatives and people close to unconditionally take the side of the doctor and they jointly lead a purposeful struggle, not with a man, with his illness. All actions should be well planned and guided by the attending physician.
