Recently in the United States banned the growing of genetically modified sugar beet. Experiments have shown that even rats die of sausage, which is GM soy in Russia, so far not all packages are marked to indicate the content of a product of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). But what if such a certificate, — not to buy at all or do not pay attention? With this question, "AIF" addressed to Irina Ermakova, international expert on food and environmental safety, doctor of biological sciences.
IE: — The food guinea female rats, my colleagues added genetically modified soybeans — the one that is used in meat, dairy, bread, confectionery industry. More than half of the rats in the first generation died, and the survivors have left no offspring. This year, similar experiments with hamsters put scientists at the Institute of Ecology and Evolution, Russian Academy of Sciences — the results just as depressing.
"AIF": — Maybe that hamsters and rats — death, for a man — normal food?
IE: — name the animals, like humans — mammals. In our bodies taken from the GM soy main carrier of heredity just not fully digested, the individual molecules can enter from the intestine into the lymphatic and circulatory systems, then — in the cells of the liver, spleen, kidneys, reproductive cells. And there are infertility, cancer, premature aging, genetic deformities and other diseases are not known yet.
"AIF": — How long our food littered GMOs?
IE: — North America — from the late 80's, we have — since the early 90's. Last year, a fifth of all cultivated land in the world are inoculated transgenic crops. And this percentage is growing.
"AIF": — How much of this dangerous food gets to our table?
IE: — In Russia, fortunately, products containing GMOs, while a little: some lines of corn, soybeans, potatoes, rice and sugar beet. But the paradox is that on Russian fields grow GM crops is prohibited, but imported from abroad for some reason allowed. Many Russian doctors believe: Russian growth of cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, especially the colon, liver, and blood may be associated just with the use of GMOs. First we had one in ten infertile couple, now — one in four. Personally, I attribute this change is also the imposition of GMOs.
"AIF": — Who and why it imposes on us?
IE: — Corporations, amassing capital for transgenic products: because it's cheaper than conventional agricultural products. Since GM seeds are sterile, their crop yields only one crop. So, the next year is to buy seeds again. Thus the productivity of farmers planting monopoly "on the needle": buy seeds only from me!
Producers of genetically modified crops under pressure, including through the government, scientists seeking to understand how dangerous GMOs. According to the British press, of 500 scientists biotechnologists 30% have changed their research "at the request" of sponsors, many of them threatened with deprivation of future contracts.
Dismissed from the Institute of British scientist Arpad Pusztay, first stated on the pathology of the internal organs of animals, which were added to the feed of GM potatoes. Italian researchers have lost grants, which revealed structural changes in the organs of mice that ate food containing GM soya. Yes, and my colleagues, getting terrified us results in rats were no grants or seek employment elsewhere.
"AIF": — What to do in this situation?
IE: — The legislation put barriers penetration of GMOs, as soon as made, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Venezuela, and later were added to Germany and France.
"AIF": — But until the Russian shelves is imported food, how to be a common man?
IE: — Unfortunately, reliable way to protect yourself from GMOs not. After all, for example, GM soy can add meatballs and dumplings, feed her cows and chickens, so we also contaminate organisms knows what. But it is possible to observe a few simple rules to, at least, minimize the damage:
— do not eat fast food: the cheaper the product, the more likely to add to these GMOs;
— not buy products and seeds imported from the U.S., Canada, Brazil and Argentina — the main supplier countries of GM food;
— carefully read what is written on the packaging, and choose foods that say "No GMO".
DIFFERENT VIEW "Dangers do not see" Vadim Lebedev, a senior researcher at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences, Candidate of Biological Sciences:
Search and cloning the desired gene, embedding them in the time between the microorganisms and protein, gene transfer into crops and laboratory, greenhouse and field trials take years of research and cost hundreds of millions of dollars, much of which goes to the security check of GM plants. They last for years, the plants literally dismantled by molecules. That's why in the third ten years of the approval of the transgenic plants were not more than 150 varieties (not all of them for food), but held tens of thousands of field trials.
