Patomsky crater. A huge mystery Russian

In the region of the republic of Buryatia Badoybinskom hidden object mystery that does not sleep scientists from around the world. Over recent years there has been organized a lot of expensive expeditions. But none of them found a clear answer: how and why this occurred, this grand object, which can even be seen from space, — Patomsky crater. Yakuts and other local residents in their legends call it a nest of fire eagle. But what really lurks in the depths of the crater, and a strange kind of threat he poses to himself?

Patomsky crater — cone of crushed limestone boulders on the hillside Patomskoye Plateau in the Irkutsk region. Discovered in 1949 by geologist Vadim Kolpakov. The height of about 40 m, the crest diameter — 76 m cone crowned flat top which is the annular shaft. In the center of the crater mound 12 meters total volume of the cone is estimated at 230-250 thousand m², weight — about one million tonnes.

The local population is called "Fire Eagle's Nest", is also known under the names "Cone Kolpakov," "Dzhebuldinsky crater", "Yavaldinsky crater."

In the period of 2005-2010. there have been several joint expeditions to Patomsky crater on the initiative of the newspaper "Komsomolskaya Pravda" and the Chairman of the Federation Council Sergey Mironov (2010).

Geological and geochemical investigations in complex expeditions in 2006, 2008 and 2010. evidence of endogenous reasons for the formation of the crater, which seem to be associated with the development of deep-seated magmatic process.

Already in 2006 it was found that Patomsky crater is a circular structure with a clearly expressed zoning, which reflects the continued education of its main structural elements: 1) the outer slope of the cone, 2) the annular shaft 3) circular ditch and 4) central peak. The crater is located among the clastic-carbonate rocks of Proterozoic and the Mariinsky suite is a material cones, composed mainly of limestone, but there are also other rocks: sandstone, metamorphic schists, feldspar and quartz-carbonate veins.

The mapping of the crater found that the most elevated part of it — the ring shaft — is divided down in shallow relief in two parts. Early on, formed the inner shaft, composed of strongly weathered gray limestone. Among these there are isolated blocks of limestone metamorphosed shales and sandstones, often quartzitic. They grow some larch. Outer ring Late Shaft complex dark gray massive crystalline limestone, weathering processes have been subject to little, and it larch missing. Becoming Patomskoye crater appears to complete the formation of the central peak, which is in its top is a massive crystalline limestone, minimally affected by weathering processes.

The estimated earlier meteorite hypothesis of the origin of the crater Patomskoye not confirmed by a comprehensive research. With unique geological characteristics of the object is a circular structure with a central-type material cone folded limestone and other rocks. Patomsky crater formed over an extended period of about 500 years ago, and its formation is due to endogenous processes, in which the main role played by the deep flow of gas and fluid flow components. Found that eruptive material in the form of lumps of sandstones and shales of limestone, derived by modern surface was heavily carbonated. As a result, in clastic rocks formed mineral association of carbonate minerals, calcite, siderite, ankerite, fluorite. The discovery of the crater within individual blocks of clastic rocks with anomalous geochemical characteristics makes it possible to assume the existence of a depth subvolcanic magma body that determined the real features of the rocks Patomskoye crater.

Watch Patomsky crater. The most mysterious place on the planet?
